    Brand new indoor enclosure!

Hi all! I've only ever posted here a few times and not in quite awhile, but I'm very excited about my brand new enclosure and thought others might be interested. I hope the photo overload is okay! I live in Bolivia, so the temps and humidity outside are obviously ideal for my native tortoises...

    Can't find a suitable substrate

Thanks! Yes, I measure the temp at tort level and I usually only have one CHE on so there is a gradient. I ordered a thermostat from Amazon but have to wait for someone coming from the States to bring it to me. Fortunately I work from home so in the meantime I can monitor pretty much all day...

    Can't find a suitable substrate

Update: We finished the cover for their enclosure: It wasn't finished and installed until after sundown yesterday, and the temp stayed at 90F all night with the CHEs turned off, so I'm slightly concerned about how hot it'll get in there this afternoon! I may have to keep the front flap open...

    Can't find a suitable substrate

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and advice! I'll get more orchid bark soon and re-do the substrate layers. And my husband is working on designing a lid to close in the enclosure. I must admit something feels a little "off" about having to enclose them completely and create a "fake"...

    Can't find a suitable substrate

It's a ReptiSun 10.0 - I followed the placement instructions exactly, I think the box said 18 inches from the ground or something like that. Do people follow different guidelines for tortoises or something?

    Can't find a suitable substrate

Thanks for sharing your experience. When I first added the yellowfoot I was worried about it, but so far there hasn't even been a hint of a problem. I do watch closely. I had another post on details of how I got them, probably easier to give you the link then type it all here :)...

Your enclosure looks beautiful, by the way!

    Can't find a suitable substrate

Thanks for both your responses. I was just reading about using orchid bark under soil and thinking it sounded like a good idea. Maybe I could do a layer of orchid bark followed by soil mixed with the other things. And I guess I'd put the plants directly in the soil since their water would be...

    Can't find a suitable substrate

Hi all, I have been trying for over a year now to figure out just the right substrate, but nothing I try ends up working. I have a redfoot and a yellowfoot, one of which is only a few months old. I also have live plants directly in the substrate. I live in Bolivia and my torts are natives, so...

    Hello from Bolivia

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! And thanks to HappyHermanns for the suggestion - I was thinking of putting all of the plants in buried flower pots to contain the moisture. After my trip to the US I'll empty their enclosure completely and try doing that and some different substrate layers.

    Hello from Bolivia

Hello! My name's Laura and I live in Bolivia with my two beloved tortoises. Chloe is a 2-3 year old red foot and Ruby is a 2-3 month old yellow foot. They are both rescues. A little over a year ago my husband and I went to a local pet shop to get supplies for his fish aquarium. I noticed they...

    How to keep substrate dry

Thank you for all of your suggestions! I will definitely try the ice cube thing - that's creative! I realized that what I could try for now is burying flower pots in the two places that she burrows rather than for the many plants. She only digs in two places so if I can contain the soil in...

    How to keep substrate dry

Hi all, I was planning to do an intro post, but I have kind of an urgent question, so I'm going to start with that first! My almost 3-year-old redfoot tortoise lives in a glass enclosure indoors. The enclosure is filled with potting soil and has a layer of orchid bark on the top and sphagnum...
