    Outdoor Housing

My sulcata is over a year old, weighs 1 1/2 pounds, and is about 6 inches long. Is he too young to be strictly housed outdoors, at least for the summer months? I live in New Orleans so the weather is perfect most of the year.

    Housing Sulcata Outside

When do you recommend housing a sulcata exclusively outdoors? My sulcata is slightly over a year old and spends several hours outdoors each day in a kiddie pool enclosure. He seems much happier and active outdoors. I have read that it is best to wait until they are fairly large to keep them...

    Help! Horrible Pet Store

Guys I need help dealing with a local pet store, Every now and then I visit the pet store to browse. In the past I have ignored the sub-par care of their tortoises due to my shyness and desire to avoid confronting management, but today I was exceptionally upset. There was a single baby...

    Terra Cotta Water Dish

Hello, I recently took the advice that I have seen online to use a large terra cotta plant saucer as a water dish for tortoises. When I fill it with water, it absorbs the water and remains constantly damp and eventually grows mold. Does anyone else have this problem? Could it just be a lower...

    I HATE pet stores

My local pet store has always been pretty favorable with me, pretty knowledgable with all of its animals. But they are horrible with tortoises. I walked in today and they were selling a medium sized sulcata with substantial pyramiding for $180. It was housed in a tank that was probably about...

    UVB lighting for Winter

I usually bring my tortoise outside for his UVB, but with the temperature changes I haven't really been able to. What would you suggest as the cheapest way of getting him UVB? I have a exo terra UVB 150 bulb, but it is a coil bulb and I had been told that these can cause blindness, so I...

    Air Holes?

To keep retain heat and humidity better, I just closed off the top of my enclosure with a sheet of plexiglass and sawed a hole out for the light fixture. Is it necessary to drill air holes for ventilation? I don't want too much heat and humidity to escape, but I dont want to suffocate him either...

    Preparing Driftwood for Reptiles

Hello everyone, In addition to a tortoise, I have an anery Honduran milksnake. I am building a larger cage for him and am planning on putting in driftwood for him to climb. Rather than buying driftwood, there is a large supply of it along the Mississippi River by my house. Does anyone...

    Need Enclosure Advice

So about 2 months ago, I built my baby sulcata tortoise a very large wooden tortoise table lined with a plastic tarp. Because the enclosure is pretty large (about 6 feet long, 2 feet wide) and shallow, I am having a bit of an issue with humidity. I am only reaching about 50-60% humidity...

    Substrate mold

For substrate, I am currently using Premier sphagnum peat moss from Home Depot. I keep noticing small spots of white mold growing under his humid hide. Should I be worried about this? I remove it every time i see it growing.

    Green Poop

I just took my tortoise outside to graze on grass. Afterwards, I put him soaking. He pooped out a green poop. This is the first time he has pooped while soaking. Should I be worried by the green color? He is in the process of switching over to a mostly grass based diet.

    Growing Weeds from Parks

Hey, I know it isnt a good idea to give your tortoise weeds or grasses from areas that you arent sure have been sprayed with anything, but if you were to pick various weeds from a neighborhood park and try to reproduce them at home (trimming the old leaves off), would they still be risky to...
