Keeping a giant tortoise in Canada/Northern US

Have you looked at the Manouria emys ssp? The black variety get to be large, and they're fairly cold tolerant.

What do you think about this tortoise?

Have you thought about just taking the very best care of your current 23 critically endangered animals? It's starting to seem like you're a kid with a credit card buying every shiny thing you see. How's that Hawksbill Sea Turtle doing, by the way? [hr] Have you thought about just taking the...

    debating session!!! (hatching RES eggs)

If they're non-native, I'd dig them up and abort them. If they are native, I'd still probably abort. The planet has too many RES already. I'd never want to intentionally breed RES, with all of the turtles out there that still need good homes. If you just want them as pets then go to a rescue and...

    How much?

Pet shop workers are notorious for being wrong. Can you describe the details of your enclosure, and provide pictures?

    Meet Bruce

I just got this little guy from Vic Morgan last week. So far he's settling in well; eating, sleeping, and pooping like a little beast.

    White speckles? URGENT

You should have a CHE for heat regardless. Emys' don't like bright lights, so heat via MVB doesn't make much sense. What's the enclosure like? UVB, heat, substrate, humidity, temperatures?

    White spots

The mouth is fine. Eating leafy greens can stain their beak green.

    Cloudy Eyes Burmese Mountain Tortoise

Being a forest dweller, they don't really dig the bright lights... and that enclosure looks bright. What I've done is mount a small tube width-wise on one end of my enclosure. It keeps it just bright enough to see, while keeping ¾ of it fairly dark and shadowed.

    need some advice

The night time temps are too cold. Aim for a steady 82 degrees day and night. You can use a CHE on a thermostat to keep it nice and steady.

Product Design - A Level Project, HELP PLEASE

He needs feedback for his graduation project, not candy coated niceties. I tried to address every problem that I saw, just as his professor probably will. Don't accuse me of being "not nice" and "bashing" his project when I'm giving my (solicited) honest opinion to hopefully help him get a...

Product Design - A Level Project, HELP PLEASE

Substrate changes don't need to be performed with such frequency that a removable panel would be necessary. Properly maintained mulch, for example, can last ~2 years without needing to be replaced. The dry-erase board seems nice for quick notes, I guess, but is inadequate for the purposes of...

    Thermostats

I've had a Herpstat 1 for about a month now, and dig it enough that I'm seriously considering getting a Herpstat 4.

    A Harness for WalkingRock

    Newest family member:-)

Congrats. Check out Tom's posts here and here for all kinds of great information about raising a smooth and healthy Sulcata. It's pyramiding now, but it's not too late to stop it if you follow Tom's guidelines. If that's cypress mulch that you're using, then it's 100% fine. Cypress is actually...

How do you know if a tort needs deworming?

If you don't know the dosage for your tortoise, then you should probably go see a vet. I assumed that you didn't know the dosage, when you asked what the dosage would be...

how much room for a sulcata tortoise?

Leopards are a lot like Sulcatas, minus the burrowing and general destruction.
