Hello everyone,
I've had Toby since October, and everything seemed fine until now. For the last week, he has been hidden in his substrate or his tunnel all day. He will not come out, and the only exception to this is if I remove him myself. He does not come out to look for food, but will eat...
I was just wondering if tortoises can get the flu. I have come down with something that I think might be h1n1 because I got the regular flu shot months ago and don't usually get the flu. I know that pets usually can't get illnesses from humans, but some pets have tested positive for h1n1 (no...
I still can't seem to get Toby's enclosure warm enough! I have a regular type lamp, and a ceramic heat emitter (About 60 Watt I believe), and the temperature is not where it should be. What else can I do to add heat to Toby's enclosure?
Toby has been making some noises in his tank, and I can't tell if he is wheezing. They appear to be breathing noises. It happens periodically throughout the day and he started making this noise recently. I thought tortoises were supposed to be silent for the most part, but do they make noises...
Hi all. Right now I've been primarily feeding Toby romaine lettuce, with a few dandelions thrown in when I find them in my yard. I tried to feed him apple pieces last week, but he walked right over them and went to the lettuce. I haven't heard that feeding fruit to torts is great, but I know...
I'm still looking for something to put in Toby's enclosure that he can hide in. I was looking at the log type things at Petco but they look like he would get stuck in them. Does anyone have any good suggestions for what I can put in his enclosure? Thanks!
The area around Toby's snot appears to be a reddish, brown color. I have only had him for a little over a week, so I don't know if he had it when I got him but I was wondering if this was indicative of a disease or is a warning sign. Should I be concerned? Or is this normal? Thanks!
Sorry, I know I keep asking tons of questions, but are the substrates they sell in bags at the pet store ok to use? I bought T-Rex Coconut Bark. Should I try to use something different in the future? I'm also looking for something that's pest free, since I keep my tortoise in my room. Thanks!
I don't feel like Toby has been eating much. I've been feeding him Romaine lettuce and he never finishes what I give him. I usually give him two leaves/pieces but he doesn't finish anything close to that. Then he usually goes to sleep after he's fed. The first day I got him he was much more...
Does anyone else's tort not liked to be soaked? I soaked mine for the first time today (I've had him since Wednesday) and he was trying to get out the whole time! And then when I picked him up to dry him off, he wouldn't stop moving his legs and he usually goes into his shell whenever I pick him...
So there was a tortoise starter pack on clearance for $6 when I went to the pet store so of course I had to buy it although I probably don't need it. There is a package of "Repti Calcium" in there. Does anyone use this for their tortoise? Would it be okay to give to mine? Thanks!
I'm having a problem properly heating my new Russian Tort's rubbermaid home. I have a lamp on him, its an exo terra and from what I know it's not a UVB lamp. I put the thermometer in where the light hits and it says its 70 degrees! Yikes! I thought that would be his warmest spot =( So now I'm...
I'm debating where to keep mine in my house. It's either my family room or my bedroom, but I'd rather keep him in the family room because my room is smaller, but the family room is in the basement and it is cooler down there (but my room is the coldest room in the house anyway). I unfortunately...
Maybe I am just being an overprotective "mother" here, but I've read various things about parasites and tortoises so I've been keeping an eye on my new tortoise's stool. Today when I cleaned them out of his tank, I noticed that they had "stuff" in them. It didn't appear to be worms, but it...
Hello everyone! I just got my first Russian tort on Wednesday! I got him from a family friend who moved and didn't have room for him anymore. I renamed him Toby (but I like to call him "The Tobe-ster) and he's at least five years old because that's how long she's had him for, he is believed to...
