    Temperature question

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question about size. He's really grown in the last few years! His shell currently measures 6.75" long and 4.5" wide. Here's a pic I just took of him today, cruising around on what's left of the lawn outside my office. Hope the picture comes through ok.

    Temperature question

Hi Tom, thanks for your reply! I should clarify that I meant living outside full-time in his outdoor table, during the summer months. He needs more room than we can offer him inside! Yes, we do live on the coast, in central California, so fog and cooler temperatures are my concern. I love the...

    Temperature question

I have a 3 year old desert tortoise who is ready to be outside full-time in his big outdoor table, but I'm not sure if it stays warm enough here for him, even in the summer. Looking for some guidance. Temps stay consistently in the upper sixties to mid seventies during the daytime, and I've...

Please help! Worried about DT hatchling

Bummer to hear that, to think I replaced that awful coil with something that's no better! What type of UVB bulb would you recommend? (I'm thinking in particular about the coming winter, when it's too cold to take our tortlings out.) Not trying to hijack your discussion Gwen!

Please help! Worried about DT hatchling

If Gwen is running the same bulb I am, it's the Repti Sun 10, it's approx. 8" long and goes into one socket. I'm using it with a horizontal-type reflector hood. (Not to be confused with the dreaded coil Repti Glo 10). http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00061V53Y/?tag=exoticpetnetw-20 I too was...

Please help! Worried about DT hatchling

Hi Gwen, I'm so sorry you're going through this! What kind of UVB are you using? How far from the substrate is it positioned? Is there any kind of screen or mesh between the bulb and the substrate? I'm using a Repti Sun 10 by ZooMed, and I have it in a horizontal terrarium hood, positioned...

    DT hatchling--how to prevent hibernation?

Iggy's dad is one handsome tortoise-man! Yes, I've been soaking Liam daily as well, just before I feed him dinner. Lately he's been napping in his bath. :)

    DT hatchling--how to prevent hibernation?

Glad you joined the forum Gwen! It sounds like your Iggy is very healthy a[hr] and thriving. As I mentioned I'm new to this too, but it sounds like you're doing a great job! Check out the humid hide ideas people have written about, I made one out of a tupperware for my little guy and he loves it! :)

    DT hatchling--how to prevent hibernation?

Hi Gwen123, I have a baby DT hatchling as well, and am also new to tortoise husbandry. We live a few hours north of you, in San Luis Obispo County. Though it's not getting cold yet, I noticed the temps dipping into the upper 60's in Liam's enclosure at night when we first brought him home, so I...

    Brumation

Not ready to brumate our little babe, but I don't think you're crazy at all! I know I would miss him, I've grown so attached already, and I can imagine how much more so I will be down the road.

    Alfalfa Sprouts For Babies?

From what I've been reading, baby tortoises need a higher protein content in their diet than adults do. Is feeding alfalfa sprouts occasionally to a hatchling a good idea? Once a week or every other week?
