    Hibernation Problems

Well my tortoise who started hibernating late November 25th has now emerged from the doghouse early. He usually don't come out until around March 17th. It's going to be 80's next 3 days, then 60's and rain. I put out some water, but he doesn't have access to grass without me moving him to the...

    Hibernation Problems

I've never had any hibernation problems in the 40 + years I've had my tortoise, until this year. Rocky has been hibernating since Nov 25th. The last few days it has been much warmer during the day, could be as high as 81 over the weekend. Today I heard Rocky moving around in the dog house. I'm...

    Hibernation Problems

Thanks for all the advice. It was 10 degrees cooler today. He stayed in his dog house. We've had such crazy weather, yesterday it was 78 during the day, then cold at night with heavy fog. The poor guy is confused. Hopefully the days will stay cooler.

    Hibernation Problems

Yes, he is heavy/solid. I don't know how well hydrated. I had him since I was a child, in the 40 years I've had him I've only actually seen him drink a few times. I didn't think it would be a good idea to soak him. [hr] How would I keep him up all winter? I can't bring him in the house...

    Hibernation Problems

I'm in Southern California. My desert tortoise(40+ years) usually starts hibernation around the middle of November every year. He hibernates in a dog house. This year he'll stay in the house for days and then suddenly when it's a sunnier, warmer day he's up again and eating. He was late coming...

tortoise hasn't come out of hibernation

He did move when I picked him up, just didn't open his eyes. When I went back a few hours later his eyes were open. I put some food at the front of the doghouse. Later when I went back he'd turned back around toward the back of the doghouse. If I were to soak him and he lets go of his stored...

tortoise hasn't come out of hibernation

The number my vet gave me was for an animal practice that specializes in exotic pets.[hr] I checked on Rocky today. His weight seems fine. No injuries. He didn't open his eyes. Maybe I'm wrong but, I just don't feel right putting him in water when he's not moving around. He normally fights to...

tortoise hasn't come out of hibernation

Thank you for all your replies. I hadn't picked him up because I always heard don't disturb a hibernating tortoise. He doesn't look injured and we don't get rats around here. I have seen his eyes and they look fine. Now that I know it's ok to pick him up, I will inspect him tomorrow. I called...

tortoise hasn't come out of hibernation

It's going to start raining tonight and more rain expected the rest of the week. I think it would be too much of a shock to bring him in the house. If I were to intervene shouldn't I wait until after the rain?

tortoise hasn't come out of hibernation

I live in Southern California. He can come out on his own. I believe he went in in November. I think I wrote it down but I'd have to look for it. He's had the same dog house set up for at least 18 years. The last few years I've noted when he came out and it was mid March. My mother took care of...
