my iguana only goes in the bottom of his enclosure. The snakes, wherever they feel like it. I think shelly eats most of hers, I check everyday, but don't find much.
I eat mcdonalds. doesn't mean it won't kill me in the long run.[hr]
makes me also wonder why the life spans of igs in capitivity used to be shorter than in the wild. Probably nothing to do with all the dog and cat food they were fed (and iceburg lettuce for that matter).
I guess I'm the minority because I do use potting soil. I recently added sulcata grass seed mix to it so now I have a little grassy enclosure. Now that the grass is growing, I water it with warm water about twice a week.
Only had shelly a couple of months, but so far, so good.
Reptiles that are primarily veggie eaters need sunlight/uvb. Iguanas, desert type tort's. There's not much dietary d3 in veggies and from what I've read about iguanas they don't thing that igs can process dietary d3.
I haven't tried the ones from home depot or lowes, I will have to remember that.
Zoomed has a new deep dish 10" dome though you would probably have to order it online, but it wouldn't cost $45.

I've used zoomed powersun without any problems. And the new version is supposed to be even better than the one I have. Also, they warranty for one year against burn out...
why the need for all the lights? if you put the light/ heat and uvb together, the torts should migrate to it.
I buy most of my supplies from reptiledirect.com. Most pet stores (even petsmart and petco) usually charge double of what they do.
most snakes only need regular house lights. They get the vitamin D the sun provides from their meals. I don't think I would want a snake that can paralyze your fingers for months:

That's funny, because every hospital I have worked agency with in San Antonio uses them and only goes rectal if they get a high reading. I use one at home because with a sick child it seems to work best for me.
I agree that the tympanic ones are worthless. You have to hurt someone to get an...

I found mushrooms growing in shelly's tub this weekend under both the food and water bowls.
From what I can find online, they look like shaggy mane mushrooms:
