I think the question should be why have anything else.
I mean:
Dogs- protein gobbling feces factories.
Cats- song bird gobbling feces factories.
Fish- born dying.
Lizards- run up the wall first chance they get.
Birds- loud, feathers everywhere and the cats keep trying to gobble them...
I am hoping to breed my male Eastern. I'm looking for a large, 5.5inch or longer carapace length, female. T. c. carolina or T. c. major. Color and markings are not important.
Hi, Nikki. No I'm not in Florida. I obtained my turtle at a store here in Washington State. Your picture is the closest similarity I've seen to Ralph. It sems from the picture that they share a similar degree of flair on the carapace edge. That may be the final bit of evidence.
I'm in Washington State. He was purchased at a store. He was in a bin containing a mixture of Easterns, Three toes and what looked like Ornates. Some could have been Gulf Coast. I was assured they were all captive bred. I have my doubts.
I decided sometime ago that I would relive my childhood a bit by keeping a box turtle or two. I intended to get an EBT. I came upon this guy and was concerned for his welfare. Since I had everything ready for a turtle I bought and brought him home.
He's a big one at 6.5 inches SCL and 611 grams...
Mine is the same way, Mary Anne. He won't eat it unless its alive. At the risk of anthropomorphizing I'm beginning to think chasing the food around is an end in itself. If I drag something around in front of him, such as a flower, he'll follow jt around and poke his nose at it. Never is he...
I have gotten alot of good and in some cases indispensible information here at the forum. This includes dietary information. However most of the time it is a list of what to feed. I would like to know more about what to avoid feeding to them. I don't mean obvious things like formaldahyde or lead...
Stephanie, his full name is Major Ralph Comstock. Major, since he seems to be a T. C. major, Comstock relates to the situation in which I found him and Ralph....well Ralph just means Ralph.
Some of the pictures that are posted in the body instead of as an attachment don't even appear for me in some browsers regardless of which photo service the OP may use.
I do ask that the box turtle keepers continue to post phots in any way they can. Those pics are usually worth the wait for me.
This is Ralph. He’s been with me for a month now. I believe he is a Gulf Coast.
He got a clean bill of health at the vet’s but for some parasites for which he’s getting meds. He energetically chases live food and completely ignores everything from the plant kingdom. Its been 30 years...
