So I was at the local sears today and I was buying some potting soil so I could start putting live plants in my RT enclosure the sales man was helping me and asked what I'd be using it for I told him its for my tortoise. He said for a turtle? What do you do with a turtle? I simply said well I love it. And he just came out an said how could you love a turtle??? Clearly this kid never owned a turtle/tortoise or he would know how great they were!!! I just thought this was an odd question for someone to ask me and thought I would share it.

Why would you NOT love a turtle, Mr. Man?

God knows he has the right no dislike turtles, but it was a very odd comment to make, in my opinion!

I don't even know what I would have said.

I get that ALL the time. I mention "my tortoise" and people stare slack jawed and ask : "your what?!". They seem to think its some kind of code for something. Even after you explain "you know,a tortoise? Like a land turtle?" They don't get it, and look mildy suspicious. While taking him on walks I've been asked if he's real......I'm REALLY tempted to walk with a remote control from one of my kids cars one time.....:D

And when people ask what I do with him I tell them I love him and snuggle him and feed him.........a lot. And pick up after him.......a lot.

You should bring a remote and a camera, so we can see their faces too. I get mostly the answer "cool" after I explain what a tortoise is.

Hehe land turtle. I love it.

People look at me like I'm crazy too. I think reptile enthusiasts of any kid do.

Some people will never understand our special bond with our shelled friends, but thats okay because it takes a special person to care for each and every captive tortoise out there.

Not to be rude or anything. I just always know those conversations when I have them always end in me shaking my head. So I just leave it to being my business and not theirs. I pick and choose when I tell people what I do with all the tortoises.

Can you imagine going to one of the charity events with a large tortoise and carrying a control box from a remote control airplane. I would guess that 3/4's of the people would believe that it's a robot.

Now if only a tortoise would obey voice commands you could enhance the gag.

My spiel is: "OMG, what is up with you? Tortoises are divine, they carry the world on their back, they are perfect in my garden and they bring me great feng shui." Silence. The end of that. Next ...

Someone once had the nerve to respond that I was eccentric with my love of tortoises, love of animals really, to which I re-tort-ed (haha, pun intended), "And your point would be what?" Fire meet fire! Sorry non-believers, but tortoise nerds rock!

I know I just kind of looked dumb founded when he asked me. Like really how could you not love turtles and tortoises? Even before I've ever owned one I had a fascination and love for them. I had no clue how to answer because I have an eternal love for my little turk <3

Ha, I do tell people that my torts are very zen. They help me remember the important things in life.

So true! Although I am only 4 weeks to the day into this, I was bitten by the (tortoise love) bug from day one! My oldest son said the other day that I am in "full-mom mode" as I spend every spare moment caring for our tort and trying to learn all of the things I don't know about him. No one really "got it" at first, but it is a HUGE responsibility to care for a living creature so dependent on you to provide for its health and well being! And really... who couldn't love a face like this?ImageUploadedByTortoiseForum1366453482.906293.jpg
