I just recieved my tortoise about a week ago, his name is Chandler and I will insert a pic of him and he was active at first but didnt eat and he then hid and stayed in one spot and the next day he walked around for a bit and finally ate a piece of my spring mix but then hid and slept again. I then had to start going out and when I left I noticed he was moving around since there was dirt in the water dish that wasnt there before but when I am home he stays in his hide or a corner of the enclosure. Also he now never touches his food which worries me. His basking lamp is normally in the 90s and his heat lamp is normally in the 80s. I am assuming he is trying to hibernate or adjust to his new home but from what the previous owners told me he ate a good amount of food. So this is just worrying me. It would be great if I could receive some feedback to help.[emoji2] 20190128_174247.jpegIMG_20190126_220902_383.jpeg

It is normal for a tortoise in a new home to act this way. Give him time. If you could post pictures of his enclosure, lights and temps, we could help you improve anything that needs it.
https://www.tortoiseforum.org/forums/russian-tortoises.81/ Is our russiantortoise section. Give the care sheets a read, it may help some.
Thanks you. I will attach some pics of the enclosure. Also this is temporary as we are waiting for it to get warmer out to make an enclosure outside. The temps are in the 80s and the basking spot is normally in the 90s. 1548809820821.jpeg1548809849032.jpeg

Tortoises will sulk for awhile when their environment changes. I agree I think it just needs time to settle in

Well, that’s a nice enclosure. Can’t see much to improve. Just give your tort some time, he will come around. Make sure your basking spot is 95 to 100 degrees. No coiled bulbs. And where is the uvb light. A tube fluorescent uvb is the best thing to use. Nice work.

Yea, I have no coiled bulbs and I will make sure to get my temp around that.

The most common reason a tortoise doesn't eat is because he isn't warm enough. A tortoise needs to be at least 80F degrees clear down into his inner core in order for the food to digest. If he can't get warmed up inside to at least 80F degrees, he won't eat because the food will just sit there inside him and rot.
