I had a terrible experience with an on-line company named: Tortoise Town, they charged $10.00 to preference the sex of a tortoise. Eight months later, I found that my male was actually a female tortoise. I believe they just sold me anything. I disputed the charge with my credit card company. A regular pet shop owner or some on-line tortoise shops do not have the expertise to determine sex of a tortoise at any age. All they want is to make a fast sale.
An expert reptile person can determine the sex when it is still a baby tortoise like Kamp Kenan on You-Tube. Follow the pictures I attached. A female tortoise has a wider mid body to accommodate egg bearing in the future. A male tortoise body is more narrow. The bottom FEMALE plastron is curved like a slight V, And the male tortoise bottom of the plastron is curved like a slight C.

Hello, and thanks! I have two Sonoran desert tortoises and they're now about 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 years old, so they should be old enough for me to tell their ages and determine if I'll need to split them up. Does this work for desert tortoises as well? Haven't had a chance to go out and check them yet, but the little buggers have figured out how to scale the brick wall around their enclosure and I'll be out there this evening building an overhanging lip. Thanks!
