Here’s a pic of our support. We’re making the trip to town, going to Home Depot. Going to look for something we can use for better support.

UPDATE: Jo Jo is doing well it seems. Very good appetite and drinking water/carrot mix every soak. She has had 4 50/50 mix soaks now and the left eye still is closed. My wife and I are confident there is no eye. So sad. There is something about a suffering tortoises face that just tugs at the heart strings. The dressing and "Crack" again were cleaned and changed, still looks ok we feel. Still researching a vet in the southern CA area that we feel comfortable with. Knowing that scraping the shell to get blood is very painful to the tortoise pain medication is a priority. We want Jo Jo's live to be free of pain, it is obvious that she has had a life full of it. Yesterday she defecated a 2 gram jet black ball. I took the "poop" apart to see what it was she was passing. I've included a pic of that poop. It was sand, mud, and a duck feather. Curious to see how long it will take to get the Mazuri pellets through her. How long is digestion then expulsion of food for these guys? Anyone know? I will continue to inspect her poop and try to get an answer to these questions.

Poor little JoJo -your description of her "poop" made me cry - how long can it have been since she last had actual food ! How can people be so uncaring? I hope all her lovely carrot soaks will soon help her get rid of all the revolting stuff she has been obliged to consume.
How fortunate that she was brought to you - probably the best people she could possibly have found to help her.

UPDATE: on the 21st we gave Jo Jo the day off. She seemed very content with just soaking up heat. On the 22nd we removed support cleaned very well. This was after a soak in just water, up until now we soaked in 50/50 mix water/carrot. She did defecate again and get ready for this. The feathers in the pic are almost 3 inches long. It’s a miracle the pointed ends didn’t puncture her internally. It was as pointed as a sharp nail, and just as stiff. You will also notice a piece of plastic next to feathers, just a little to the right.
We started weighing her 6 days ago, 580 grams. Yesterday she weighed 639, that’s a 10% increase in body weight in a week. We are proud parents to say the least. For those of you keeping track, still no open eye on the left. Still holding on to hope it’s in there.

Dip a Q-tip in some mineral oil and gently rub the eye to see if you can "unstick" it. You man need to grab her head behind the jaws to keep her from withdrawing into the shell.

THANK YOU Yvonne, doing that this morning. We really want an eye to be there. Such a sad case, you were right these guys are very resilient.

It's great news that JoJo is gradually getting rid of the stuff clogging her insides - perhaps soon you will see something better appearing. I do hope it won't be long.
I can't help puzzling about your reference to John Wayne as a neighbour - I'm in the UK, and maybe it's a reference that everyone in the USA understands !
Love to little JoJo from Angie

Perhaps that statement is a reference to the John Wayne Airport which is in Santa Ana, CA. If so, it is most likely quite noisy living next to the airport, and most people would avoid doing so.

John Wayne would be a terrible neighbor due to the fact he holds nothing back. In the movies Wayne says and does things people would love to do but are scared to. I have no problem saying what I want and how I feel, your feelings don't matter to me. There is also no problem using physical force to handle a problem. EXAMPLE: My neighbor trespassed on my land, I confront him, he has a smug, sarcastic answer and acts as if "To bad" for me. So jump over the fence and go after him. He runs like a little sissy. So my neighbor hates me now, cause I was going to beat him up. Never mind HE trespassed on my land first, then acted as if there was nothing I could do about it. He will never trespass again on any land. You always hear "Violence is never the solution." Every police, sheriff, state police, and military uses weapons and violence to solve problems. So in a nutshell I will have no problem hurting your feelings or more.

So yesterday was a good day for Jo Jo. She ate 29 grams of Mazuri pellets, moistened of course. This is exactly 5% of her body weight. It seemed as if she would never stop eating. The supporting device, Popsicle stick taped on, is working good for now. Still doing research on how to get the shell debrided, from a vet. any help would be great. As here the temp is still reaching over 80, she gets some outdoor time and some sun everyday.
She knows your on her side and life has improved. Keep doing what your doing. Please add a cuttlefish (same you provide to a parrot ) to the enclosure and a dusting of calcium to fresh leaves as this helps bones, shell and claws.

We have well water and it is very high in calcium. So not sure if additional calcium is needed.

I see ! Thank you for explaining ! Actually, it is obvious you are a very kind and good person - your care and concern for little Jo Jo show that !

When we lived next door to you Yvonne our son's bus stop was on the street side of your property. Every morning when the bus would pull over and stop to pick up my son, a truck would disregard the flashing lights and stop sign and pass. I hated this as my 6 year old was getting on this bus that some a hole couldn't wait for. I could see this guy causing a wreck on a main road with this school bus my son was on. Our chicken roosted in our garage, so every morning when we would go to the bus we would let the chicken out and get her egg. Pretty sure you see whats coming. We're at the bus and here he goes passing the bus, so I stepped in front of said truck to stop it. When he slowed down to avoid me I let the egg fly, right into his windshield.
Of course he didn't stop, of course he called the police and reported me, as did the bus driver. I called the transportation office for the school and explained what happened. They advised me that they had filed a report with the Highway Patrol. When I called the Highway Patrol office and explained what had occurred they laughed hysterically. "You egged his truck....Ha Ha Ha" is what they just kept repeating.
So what happened was the bus driver was only turning on the flashing lights, not the stop sign. This was so cars could pass and the bus wouldn't cause a traffic jam, even though it's illegal to pass a bus loading kids. The bus driver was reprimanded for not using the stop sign. The truck driver received a warning for passing the bus while red lights were flashing.
None of this matters........of course, it's easier to blame me for my "outrageous" behavior.

I bet John Wayne would never have had the imagination to think of that !!

UPDATE: 10/23.......Let her soak and eat what she wanted, very hungry she is. Her weight was 661 grams without the support we made. No poop or pee today, wondering how long before she poops out all this food. Of course as we do every day we clean the crack well and cover in Vetericyn antimicrobial hydrogel with a stabilizing "stick" so the crack is immobile.

10/24.......She pee'd....and pooped twice now she weighs 613, WOW. Still her feces is full of foriegn objects with sand and rocks. Her poop is moist and soft now but still not the Mazuri pellets we've been giving her. We think that there might be an eye there after all. Thank you Yvonne for the mineral oil trick, it seems as if there is a rather big "scab" like thing over her eye. With the mineral oil it seems to be shedding off, fingers crossed.

Because of the missing scales on her head I'm guessing the ducks were pecking at her eye. Let's hope it's ok in there under the scab.

These pictures came through ok. Have you figured out what you were doing wrong?

@Tom recommends this vet, if you can make the drive. If you can make the drive, that would be the best one:
