Hey all:
This is a dumb question but I was just wondering what is so bad about pyramiding, how often it occurs, and how to prevent it.
Thanks :tort:

Not a dumb question at all. To get a better understanding of how it is bad, you have to understand the anatomy of a tortoise first. The shell is basically the outer skeleton with bone structure and organs built in so to speak. The shell is indeed sensitive due to nerve endings. Pyramiding is caused by abnormal or imbalance scuff growth. It can be caused by stress, malnutrition, humidity and temperature issues. These factors vary on the species you are keeping.

Oh and it can not be reversed. You can stop the process by diagnosing the issue causing the pyramiding. But there is no cure:(

Search the forum. There are plenty of threads pertaining to pyramiding and it's affects. As well as, more importantly, some especially good threads on how to prevent it from happening.

What Blafirira said.

Unfortunately, some people only seem to consider it cosmetic, but it is indeed much more than that. Having the right diet and humidity can work wonders to prevent pyramiding.
