We have 2 desert tortoises and built them separate enclosures last year. Not "easy" because of the block wall (and their dens) but my husband is multi-talented. The grass has grown in nicely and they do eat it. I'm hoping to grow more that they can eat.

This is just over 500 sq ft and still a work in progress.

I live in the low desert and the heat kills every plant I try.

This is approximately 600 sqft. It's hard to see, but behind the palo verde and CA pepper tree there is a 6ft x 4ft shade cloth "cabin" over the original burrow that I dug. Then Chug dug a burrow of his own which I have covered over because I'm concerned about its stability.

I should mention that this was built for Chug, a desert tortoise. Unfortunately Chug died in brumation in 2020. The enclosure is now occupied by a Burmese Star, named Sulafat.

Burmese don't burrow, so the burrow is going unused for now. Instead he lays under a corner of black shade cloth to escape the heat! Silly tortoise! :tort:🤷‍♀️20220721_162422.jpg
