Hello,

My friend brought me this tortoise after finding it on the side of the road (we live in a very urban area), and I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what species it might be. It is about 5-6in, has a tail that wraps around to the side and has two tiny spurs on the end of the tail.

I live in northern Texas and I'm most concerned about whether it is an abandoned tortoise or an indigenous species, so I know whether to release it somewhere safe or keep it. I've researched a bit and I'm guessing it's a russian tortoise (horsfield)??

Pics are attached.

Thanks a ton, guys!

it is definitely a elongated tortoise rather than a russian

The elongated tortoise originates from south Asian, India, Burma, Thailand, and South China.
In fact , I am keeping one.

By the way, what is the substrate on the pics?

I would put up flyers or an ad in the paper and see if you can find the owner before you just automatically keep it. There may be someone out there frantically looking for it. Russians are great escapers and even the best made pens can sometimes fail with these little Houdinis.

I would be sick to death if one of my tortoises got out and I couldn't find it.
