I've been researching about tortoises for the last 2 weeks non stop and I think I'm pretty sure on what tortoise I would like to get and I know all the other accessories to get but I'm a bit weary on exactly what one to get; spur thighed or horsfield? Help please! And also do tortoises HAVE to go into hibernation? Would like to know ASAP thank you! X

In my opinion, you just can't beat a Horsefield's for a beginner tortoise. They are pretty forgiving of beginner mistakes, get to be very personable and are fun to watch.

"hibernation" or rather brumation, when talking tortoises, is something mother nature invented to get a cold blooded animal through a long period of cold weather. If you tortoise isn't experiencing cold weather, for example is kept in the house under lights and heat, then he doesn't need to hibernate.

Welcome to the wonderful world of tortoises, and to the Forum!

I agree with Yvonne and if your not planning on breeding them or if you haven't had them a year don't bother
To give them a long sleep keep them awake and enjoy them
