Need identification

Sorry I disappeared. I just got the family to the beach, and packing took all of my attention for a couple of days. A friend who is a herpatologist looked at him and agrees that it is a gopher tortoise. She says he seems to be pretty old and was likely, as several of you have said, picked up by someone visiting further south, brought home and let go. My friend is licensed to care for reptiles, and she has taken him into her home. She has other tortoises and he is in good hands. Poor thing......I hate to think that he spent his entire life in a place and was thoughtlessly moved by someone. I don't know much about tortoises, but this has ignited my interest. I am happy to have found this place. Thank you for your help!
