I understood that the dirty thing in the carapace is injury carapace.
I'm looking for the picture. I'm excited to see the growth!!
Yes, it looked like Mud at first, but it was the rotted shell. When it fell off, and more fell off after that picture was taken, it exposed two of his back ribs. The Veteranarian thinks that he was either in the shell too long, and it started to decompose, or he the egg was trapped where there was a lot of moisture, so the shell started to mold. He came out of the shell that day looking like that. Thank goodness he is doing much better. I uploaded some new photos of the little guy, and his shell is healing rather quickly.I understood that the dirty thing in the carapace is injury carapace.

we adopted a tortoise many years ago when I was in high school. My mom did most of the work, and she couldn't keep it, so she took it to a wildlife refuge. I always felt bad about that. Now I can save one, and I will do my best to raise him.I don't know how much experience you have had with torts, but the way you looked after this little guy, incredible.
I didn't think it would recover so fast. It looks really really good. And just think how many other people you're gonna help with this thread. Your care goes beyond words Mara29. Again he \ she looks great,.....Again incredible job!!!
