Help identifying this baby

I found this little guy on my lanai this morning. Can anyone tell me what type of tortoise he or she is and how to tell the gender? I want to take proper care of him or her. He isn't scared of me and is very active which makes me believe he was a pet that someone didn't want any more. Thank you!

Box turtle not a tortoise. What State are you in?

If you live in a state native to box turtles, it may have been a wild one.

I live in Hawaii, someone else on a different site said it looked like a Sulcata Tortoise which led me to this page.

Definetely not a sulcata tortoise. That is a box turtle.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum!

Since box turtles aren't native to hawaii, this is someone's escaped pet. You should advertise to try to find it's owner. It looks like its had a run-in with a dog in the past, so maybe the dog took it outside its fence and dropped it.
