Hello, What kind of tortoise is this?

My wife found this tortoise walking down a road in western New Mexico. It looks like a desert tortoise to me but it was found at about 6500 feet elevation.

Any identification and care tips would be appreciated.

It's an ornate box turtle. It might be either a luteola or an ornata. Box turtles are terrestrial turtles. Here's a good site for info on them:
