Hi,
This is Karen. Hello to Everyone as Tortoise lovers!!! :D Yes I am making another introduction again. I had Bubba for over a year and was killed by freak accident few weeks ago and also got a new baby one, too. So I do not know it's sexes but am hoping for an adorable female but doesn't matter. I just wanna see it grow and cherish this one. So it's new name is Bub as it either sexes name sounds good to me. It was my husband that created the name idea.
I really do adorable this cute Bub. It is so passionate into anything, affectionate, sweet, caring, and bright. Yes, very small than I had the bigger one. Very different and new. I am willing to learn anything new.
I believe heat is the problem. I do not wanna to leave Bub outside and get attacked from fire ants. UGH! I am trying to think of a way to get him used to heat to make him to eat more to gain. I do not have UVB light but do have heating pad. I do bring it outside to receive the sun rays daily and let it learn it's new surround yard, too. Yes, it's still eating but not enough. Would Mazuri pellets work? I believe it's probably not used to new home. Had it for few weeks.
Thank you for reading! I would have to change the icon picture of our new baby.
God bless you all and god bless all those beautiful tortoises... <3 <3
Truly yours,
Karen

Good luck with your new baby, Karen. :)
I am very sorry to hear about Bubba, so let's try to help you with Bub.
Have a read of http://www.tortoiseforum.org/threads/beginner-mistakes.45180/
and http://www.tortoiseforum.org/threads/how-to-raise-a-healthy-sulcata-or-leopard-version-2-0.79895/
then http://www.tortoiseforum.org/threads/for-those-who-have-a-young-sulcata.76744/
I assume the new tortoise is a sulcata ?
If not, i apologize, but the first link will always be useful.
I understand that original Mazuri is more popular with the tortoises than the new LS stuff, or whatever it's called.
It's good it's eating something, and if it's outside a lot, probably more than you think.

So sorry for your loss. A warm welcome to you and Bub! The links above are full of great info...if you adjust your enclosure and temperatures to match what is in the care sheets your new tort should do very well. Regarding the ants, FOOD GRADE diatamaceous earth is a safe, natural way to keep them away from your tortoise. You just sprinkle the powder in and around his enclosure. Make sure you re-apply if it rains, because DE does not work after it gets wet. Also, be sure to get food grade (I get it on amazon.com) not the pool version.
