hi, today I saw some Hermann tortoises for sale but one of them had less markings around the base. is this normal in young tortoises as they were 1 year old. its the one on the left hand side. the one in the food dish kept head butting the glass window!

Hi, Yes this is very common. Their can be a lot of variety in colouring.
Tortoise shouldnt be kept in glass terrariums. They do not understand they can not walk through it. Only creates stress, that's why he is head butting the glas window.

Actually glass aquariums are not bad at all for young/baby tortoises. Some have no problem with the glass. Others, if they do, a simple fix of attaching paper or other item to block the view works great.

I'd recommend translucent Rubbermaid style sweater boxes over glass aquariums. The lack of total transparency cuts down greatly and even eliminates some tortoises from pacing. The containers are far less expensive and safer to handle than glass aquariums. They are also lighter in weight and easier to clean. Another advantage of the using plastic sweater boxes is that you can actually upgrade to larger sizes as your tortoise grows for very little additional cost.
