Hi everyone, I know this forum since two years ago.
It has been a trusty source of tortoise information for me.
Last year I started keeping a Russian tortoise. Thanks to this site it is helathy and well.
However, a leopard tortoise hatchling that I adopted recently has strange shell.
I am afraid that the scrapes are dead since they look wrinkled and they have no pattern.
Is this true?

RE: wrinkled scrape

I believe the word you are looking for is "scute" not scrape. The color is normal. The wrinkles and texture is how they look when they hatch. As they grow, new material is added in between the baby scutes.

RE: wrinkled scrape

Oh sorry, hahahahaha, thanks for the remainder
I mean its scute, not scrape.

sorry it's my cellphone ca,era, I agree with all of you it sucks.

However, if you guys look at the first photo, you can see on the left is my healthy leopard tortoise, it has pattern on its inner scute, but the tortoise on the right doesn't have pattern on the scute.

photo 2 show the side view , showing the scute is wrinkled and concaved.
photo 3 show the rear view, showing the scute is also wrinkled and concaved.

also it behaves differently than others, it rarely bask, never eats only drink when I moved it to water dish.

Hi Trubie:

I know you've been a member for a while, but I just wanted to say...

Welcome to the forum!!

May we know your name and where you are?

It looks to me as if your baby has been burned. Maybe by the light being too close? Was it like that when you got it?

I can't tell anything from your photos. There is a lot of variability in color and pattern, especially at that size and age. Post a clear photo and we'll be better able to help. His behavior sounds as if there might be a problem, but he could just be a shy one or he might even feel intimidated by the other one. We need more info and a good pic.

By the way, if it gets burned is it still okay for her growth? or she won't be able to make it?

If it has survived the burn (if that is what happened), it will likely survive with proper care. I suggest separating them if you have not already done so in case it is a contagious condition. The damage looks too widespread, involving vertebral and costal scutes, and too specific, only affecting the areolae, to be a burn from a light or heat source other than possibly a fire. It looks more like an erosion due to an infection or maybe a rodent attack.

Clearer pictures would certainly help.
