I keep reading different view points on what is the best thing for the bottom of a Leopard Tortoises habitat and I am very confused. Cyprus mulch is bad when wet but good? Hay isn't good? Alfalfa is bad? So what is the best thing for us to get?

I don't have Leopards but do have numerous chelonia and use cypress mulch and fine grade orchid bark that I keep moist depending on the species. You can keep cypress mulch wet or damp whatever you want it's great stuff...

Do I need to worry about bugs or contaminants in the mulch?

Thank you for your help.

I also use Cypress and keep it wet, I have a Sulcata not a leopard, but they are similar. I have not had any problems with bugs or mold. I poor at least 3 cups of water a day into my enclosure, I live in the desert so it is difficult to maintain humidity.

So the habitat should be warm between 75-90 depending on the time of day and the mulch should be moist to create humidity...the humidity doesn't hurt the shell? I read that if its too humid it can warm the shell? I dont want to hurt her. So I want a light humidity within the habitat?

Do I need to worry if she has been raised in a very dry environment till now? She has been in very dry conditions. She had some water but no humidity??
