And keepers aren't always aware of how quickly a tort can suffocate/drown/overheat when they fall upside down inside a "safe" habitat.

Thanks.. but why would anybody put them upside down?
Some people do it for weighing, measuring, or photos of the tail and anal scutes for sexing. I recommend against it. They can be weighed and measured right side up. And photos can be done like this to show the sex:
