Okay so I have a hatchling box turtle and I'm thinking of buying a used 40 gal breeder (it's only $30!!) The thing is, is that the lady selling it says it's for reptiles only/ not for fish. I'm assuming it's a "terrarium" vs being an "aquarium" Would this adequately hold enough substrate with out there being issues? I don't really need it to hold water.

With my hermit crabs I bought an aquarium because they need about 10" of sub which is very heavy. And a terrarium couldn't support that weight.

Yes, that will work fine for a hatching box turtle.

Even a reptile tank would hold 10" of gravel or water. They just aren't made to be filled with water.

Your 40 gallon reptile tank will be fine for your baby boxie.

Sometimes I would sell tanks ( back when I kept fish ) as terrarium or reptile tanks 'cause they had set dry for a time & might leak.

Tanks can be re-sealed with clear silicon , you can get at pet store. Pretty simple.

Tom's. right , a terrarium will hold enough water.
