Is there a cheaper source for orchid bark?

I bought a few 3lb bags of small sized orchid bark, but each bag is $19. I’m trying to give my tortoise 4” of substrate, but I think I would need a LOT more substrate to cover her enclosure.

is this just the way it is? Do I need to replace all of it once a month? I scoop out pees and poops when I see them.

You could try putting coconut coir on the bottom and the bark in top.
You do not need to change it out. Just keep up with the spot cleaning.
If you bake or boil it before using, it will help keep the tiny bugs away longer.
Otherwise try a nursery or online for cheaper price.

I've found coco coir adds a lot of volume to substrate, aids in keeping humidity, and for burrowing species provides a great mix with orchid bark. At a local hardware store I bought a cube block of the stuff and after adding water to it, I have more than I know what to do with. Would highly recommend.

It can be found or ordered in bulk from local nurseries.

You can get 24 quart bags of repti-bark on Chewy.com for $17.28.

You do not need to replace it if you spot clean it.
