I have a large heard of Marginated tortoises living outside year round in a huge planted area of land. They are pretty much self sufficient. Here are some photos:

This is one type of tortoise I have never had. I do find more and more that I love that skirting. Where do you live that you have them outside? How big is the area? Can we see more pictures of it?

Very nice!!! I like how you have some light ones and dark ones. All of mine are light, but I would like to add some darker ones too. Keep the pictures coming!

Gorgeous tortoises. I love the one of the large dark one, with the juvenile nearby. What a dream, to have them be more or less self-sufficient! I hope some day I have acreage where I can have that scenario...

@Jacqui - Margies can thrive in a surprising range or climates. @GBtortoises lives in upstate NY, and they do well there. Here in the Pacific NW (border of WA and OR), they CAN live outdoors year round - mine are still too small to do this, but the guy who hatched my Buttercup keeps his outdoors, and only brings them into the garage during the deadest of winter for safer hibernation. Tim/Robin keeps/breeds them also, and he lives in Idaho. Their care is a lot like for Russian torts, except they are much bigger. I can't wait for my little group of 3 to grow up... I hope to add to them, but I want to make sure these 3 are spoiled rotten first.

Awesome photos Stephen.

They certainly are pretty self sufficient when set up right. Once "dialed in" they become absolute egg laying machines. This winter has been through the roof with egg laying here. Truly a rewarding and somewhat over looked species. I love these things.

Here's a few more for this thread:
