How old roughly, do your tortoises have to be to tell if there male or female

Age doesn't matter as much as size. For a Russian I would say about 4+ inches, however there are only three ways to know for sure which you have.

1 The tortoise lays eggs
2 the tortoise "flashes" you
3 it is found out endoscopically

I would say that there is no 100% sure until the tortoise is at least 5 inches. If it looks to be a male (long tail, slit shaped vent), then it is almost positively a male. If it looks like a male, it could still be growing, and may turn out to be a female!! Females have a much shorter tail, it is more wedge-shaped, and the vent is shaped like an asterisk (*) rather than a slit.

Here are a few pics that give you an idea:

...a young male (still growing, about 5 inches shell size)DSC_8988 - Copy.JPG

...and a 'classic' female (young)Jill.JPG

There is also a good explanation with pics here: http://www.russiantortoise.net/male_female.htm
