Hi everyone! We are getting a Russian hatchling who is due to be delivered tomorrow morning. First time tortoise owners... For now we have him in a 40 gallon breeding tank and will eventually get a bigger enclosure as he grows.

Anywho, I read that they need 12 hours with the lights on (I have a basking light and a UV light). We have a timer I planned on keeping the lights on from 8am-8pm. I'm confused though for the other 12 hours is there just darkness? Won't the little guy get cold???

Hello and Welcome. Please read the caresheet for your baby Russian under the Russian section. Your baby needs humidity and heat at night, but no light at night. A ceramic heat emitter of two depending is what most use for night heat.
