Hello Everyone... We received this tortoise from a neighbor that is moving out of town. I've been looking on the web for an image match to identfy it but with no luck... Can anyone help me ID the species. He (she?) is pretty cool and I want to give it a good home.

Thanks!

Its a box turtle. I'm leaning towards a three-toed box turtle, Terrapene carolina triunguis. However, there is also one called a desert box turtle, Terrapene ornata luteola and they look like colorful three-toed box turtles. Sometimes its hard to distinguish between them.

I think its a eastern box turtle....

google eastern box turtle and click on the image tab///you will see the resemblience

of course three toed turtles can mix with easterns, so it could be both, if you have three toes in the back

No, its deffinitely NOT an eastern box turtle. Easterns have a very distinctive pattern on their carapace that resembles a backwards "e" This turtle is either a very colorful 3-toed or a desert box.

It's pretty domed for an ornate. Could likely be an ornate/three toed cross, which apparently does occur in nature.
