My cat was laying on my lap earlier today and she yawned with a great big mouth, just like the picture of your little tortoise. It made me wonder...when all they do is take little bites off veggies (or cat food) why do they need mouths that open so wide?

So they can fit their own turds into their mouths! Just ask Stagger all about it.
I mean, really, have you really thought about the importance of them being able to open their mouths wide to fit their entire turds in it?
It's quite a job and a tortoise needs to be well prepared for turd chomping!!

This above little guy hatched last spring ( '08 ).. is from my Alpha 'Guyana' female.. and shows how a juvenile can and should look when raised properly. This pic shows colors that are typical from her..

And one of her '05 hatchlings..

And earlier this year..
