A tortoise was found in my neighborhood and I would like to know what type it is so that it is fed and taken care of properly if the owner is not found. Please take a look and idea if you can. Thanks
Thanks for the info. Now that it has been a couple of days the yolk sac has absorbed quite a bit and looks more normal. My biggest concern was that the scoots along the top edge were gray and I wasn’t sure if that was normal but it now looks like a regular hatchling. The yolk sac has stayed...
I’ve had three RFs hatch out in the last couple of days. The third one hatched out yesterday morning. The yolk sac was so big he would tip over onto his face. ? I know this is normal. I had him on damp paper towel with damp paper towel loosely over him with a breathable cover. I noticed last...
Apparently the tortoise hung out in her yard overnight and then headed out in the morning.
I’m good. No more babies at this point but Indy is still laying eggs every so often. I think there are three that are going to hatch in the next 2 to 4 weeks. How are you doing?
This guy/gal showed up in a local yard and I wanted to make sure it’s a gopher tortoise so I can advise the homeowner appropriately. What’s the verdict?
It’s way too early to tell. Male tortoises typically “flash“ when they are reaching sexual maturity and figuring out what it is and how “it” works. I think my redfoot boy was about 5 years old.
Yes, she is quite fertile and has laid around 22 eggs that I know of. Several were cracked by myself and the torts because I didn’t know they were there. For instance, she laid 5 in her hide and my male dug them up and cracked two while he was getting comfortable one day. I moved the other thee...
I’m sorry to say that the poor little guy didn’t make it. I think it was just too much for him given that he was so little. Once he passed, I took a really good look at his leg and it was actually completely open and the leg was barely attached by muscle and skin. I could see his femur and hip...
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. As soon as the plastron fuses, I was going see about attaching tiny wheel.
Infection is a real possibility. I was able to get some of the dirt off but there is still quite a bit of dirt in the yolk sac and some crevices. I didn’t see any blood on him or...
Well, the little peanut made it through the night and evidently moved around some to temperature regulate. I’ll soak him a few times to day and hopefully it’ll stay hydrated.
Last night when I was trying to clean it up, it moved around a lot and was pretty feisty trying to bit at me. Hopefully...
I think my adult female tortoise stepped on an egg that I didn’t know about and perhaps spurred it to hatch. I found the hatchling among the pieces of shell and it is very small, 22 g, the shell is very soft and the plastron scoots are far from fusing. There is quite a bit of the yolk sac intact...
