Hopefully this is the only clutch for a while...I was unaware of the sex of the turtle up until now, so ideally I will need to upgrade her setup to incorporate an egg laying site. I am entertaining the idea of an outdoor enclosure, but I live in Wisconsin, so it would only be a seasonal home.
She is definitely being much more active than usual, and rarely seen basking. Her appetite has not been an issue tho, which is good. I will try the separate egg laying setup this weekend and see if I have any luck.
How long again can I expect before she has more eggs?
Well her current setup would not allow for an area to lay.
To follow that up, a second egg was laid during the night and mostly eaten by the time the lights came on. From the minimal information I can find on the matter, it sounds like I will need to make a separate temporary tub with a few...
I have a midland painted turtle that has about a 4-5" shell and is about 2.5 years old, healthy and active. Yesterday I found in the tank, what I am almost positive was the remains of an egg. I know turtles are capable of laying eggs without males and that they are just infertile, but I would...
Well I still have not received any emails or call from the zoo...which is confusing. Here I am illegally in possession of a protected species in the state (according to the DNR), and no one being proactive on properly relocating it.
Unfortunately I still don't think it has eaten anything. I've...
So still no contact from the Zoo, for which I can't wait forever...
More importantly, I still don't believe that it has eaten anything I have offered yet. I've tried several different foods including, lettuce/greens, blackberries/raspberries, mushrooms, and dried mealworms. I try not to bother...
Thanks for the help everyone. Hopefully I will hear from the folks at the Marshfield Zoo soon. I will just let them know the things we discussed about possible hybrid between a 3 toe. If you all would like, I can follow up on here with how things progress. Maybe they will let me name it and come...
They definitely look a lot a like. Too bad, it could use a good home. If it ends up at the zoo I'm sure it will be a excellent place.
Also, it hasn't eaten since I picked it up Sunday night, but it did defecate. How long without eating until I should be worried? I also did put a small water...
I think no matter what the species is, it has to be a released pet. Even if it were an ornate, they historically do not occur in the location where it was found, or so we know.
I know exactly what you are saying tho. Having been in the pet trade and herps hobbiest for years, I greatly respect...
So do I just pretend that it is and send it over to the zoo? I mean realistically it's probably better off in their care than mine or a friend of mine who was going to adopt it. How different is the care between ornata and Eastern or Gulf...or whatever it is.
Update...The DNR is hoping to have the turtle relocated to the Marshfield Zoo in Marshfield, WI. Apparently they are currently building a turtle exhibit and could provide a home for the turtle. Everyone involved seems to be under the impression that this is indeed ornata. Regardless, I think...
Completely forgot to get pictures...but I did set up a temp tub for it until I figure out what to do. I'm definitely seeing the similarities with the gulf coast, but there seems to be more yellow on the arms and head than any of the gulf coast pics I am seeing. I'm guessing Terrapene are quick...
