    Russian tort Outdoor Home

Finally moved Leroy to his new outdoor enclosure a week ago! Its 4'x8' and enclosed with 1" chicken wire. The border has cement blocks below to prevent underground escapes. ;) His house is insulated with a hinged roof and has timothy hay inside. He has plenty of plants to munch, a sunning stone...

Sandy, I definitely sympathize! I keep reminding myself that he won't starve himself forever. No matter how stubborn.

Leroy has been set up with lamps (heat and Vit D) for 2 days now. Also about 24 hrs ago, we happily removed the sand and replaced it with soil from the yard and he has his leaves back. He had enough soil and leaves to bury himself last night so I'm happy about that. Need to get a thermometer but...

Nat. Geo Article about Aldabra islands and tortoises.

Very cool article! I remember seeing the Galapagos Tortoises in a magazine when I was about 6 yrs old and falling in love with tortoises and turtles at that moment!

Wowzers! He just wandered into your life? That's great! Hope he keeps the grass well cut LOL Hopefully he will come back to the box when he needs it and you won't need to lock him in. Will he be able to go in and out when he wants?

    Leonardo's night box/winter house

Hey, Critta. I'm new to the site, but seeing how close we live, perhaps we could learn something from each other as we go. I just adopted a Russian and have him inside a terrarium most of the time since its been so cool and wet lately. Will spend the next month or so on his more permanent...

Welcome! Great pics. I'm in a similar situation with my Russian Tort. He won't touch romaine, broc, etc. What kind of pellets are you using?

    Box Turtle Outside Habitat

Here are some pics of our box turtle habitat. It is 14' by 5'. Has 2 soaking areas made of unused oil pans. About 6' by 3' is occupied by an old salad bar tray from a closed restaurant. We drilled holes to allow rain to drain. The top is made of 4 hinged panels with chicken wire. The outer...

1 Russian Tort and 3 Box Turtles

Thanks Tom! I'm here to learn so definitely appreciate all help. The sand is going to be replaced today. Soil and leaves will be used until I can get maybe some cypress mulch. The fruit wasn't eaten and we've been offering Romaine lettuce, cacti, broccoli, carrot. The pic with the fruit is...

1 Russian Tort and 3 Box Turtles

Hey everyone! Great site and info, so I had to join. I recently adopted a Russian Tortoise and small box turtle that were kept for some time together in a terrarium. We quickly remedied the situation as best as we could. The turtle, Bobra (Bob), joined our other 2 box turtles, Roux and Nessie...

Ok. Thanks. We want to keep his habitats as close to his natural habitat as we can. He loved to hide in the leaves when he had them. Would soil, leaves, mulch be ok? Does the type of mulch matter? Obviously we won't get any stained or treated mulch.

Also, isn't sand part of the RT's natural habitat? We kept him in dry leaves a few days til we got sand. He seems happier in the sand.
