    New tortoise table!

Update on this new tortoise table! The hanging lights are UV mercury bulb and ceramic heat emitter, the clamped light is a simple LED light. The platform adds more room for Flash Gordon to move around and more hiding space. This is his winter enclosure and will be building a summer enclosure...

    New tortoise table!

Thanks @Yvonne G and @Tom for the advice. This enclosure is no where near done! I've ordered some better lights to keep Flash warm and happy. I also have plans for a partial second story to increase his area of exploration. Also, I finally have a spot to build an outdoor enclosure as well...

    New tortoise table!

Hello all! I recently moved from a shared space back into my parents' house and my dad and I built a new enclosure for Flash Gordon (male Russian, been with me for 5 1/2 years)! Its ~48x24 inches of plywood. The next "to do" is an improved lighting set up, more substrate, and more variety...

Confirming approximate age of my Russian?

Hey all! I know you can't accurately age Russian tortoises until they've died, but I thought I'd try to age Flash Gordon. I've had him for 4 years (since June 2015). He's most definitely wild-caught (as I bought him from Petco, which I know is not ideal, but I didn't know that until after) and...

    Shell worries

I've got UVB and a heat/UVA light as well as a clay heat emitter because we're in the northeast US and its getting quite cold here. The lamps are about 8-9 inches away so his basking spot gets to about 100 degrees. I don't have a humidity meter (read: desperately need to get one) but I spray his...

    Shell worries

I've had my Russian, Flash Gordon for about six months so I'm still mildly concerned about everything. Today's worry is his shell. it seems a little dry and flaky almost? I've read a few threads and it seems like I need to up the humidity in his enclosure, but I thought I'd get some opinions...

    Paranoid about shell growth

Unfortunately, I don't have the resources to do that at this time but I do take him outside whenever I can and there is natural light hitting his enclosure during the daytime

    Paranoid about shell growth

That's what I've read, but I'm just a natural worrier. I was looking back at my pictures from when I first got him and they look the same so I probably just noticed it rather than it just recently occurring. But I'll up the humidity just to be on the safe side!

    Paranoid about shell growth

I plan to order some coco coir come next pay day. Just pouring water into it keeps it moist? I've got a 50w basking bulb and a UVB bulb at one corner together about 10 inches from the substrate.

    Paranoid about shell growth

Its been fairly humid here (north east US) recently and I've tried to spray his enclosure with water every few days. Any tips to keep the humidity at good levels?

    Paranoid about shell growth

Hi everyone, I've been through quite a few different threads about shell growth because I'm absolutely terrified of Flash Gordon pyramiding. I've only had him for about 2 months, but I want him to be the happiest lil tort he can be. I've been trying to soak him and get him moving around for the...

    New tortoise mom

Hi all, I'm Kylie and after reading this forum for months, I finally got my precious russian tortoise, Flash Gordon. I built his enclosure from an old bookcase I had the day before I got him because it seemed like the best (and cheapest) option. He's been doing really well the past few days...
