    Thoughts on gender?

Any ideas yet as to whether Emmett is a boy or a girl? He's a year old. Ha, okay. My google fu says it's the thickness of the tail that indicates sex. I was thinking of my turtles, which you can sex by their curve of their shell. :)

This is the sound of growing up...

My boyfriend kept insisting Emmett had grown more than I thought he had, so I did a quick picture compare. He was right; I was wrong. Pardon the dirty bowl -- it's cage cleaning time around here but I was anxious to take the pic.

This is the sound of growing up...

I brought Emmett home in November 2010, just a wee hatchling. (The picture of him in his green bowl.) I think he was three months old, or thereabouts. He's growing and eating and I am looking forward to getting him an outdoor playspot next summer! He's much heavier than he was but I...

    ZooMed Natural Grassland Tortoise food

Well, I went ahead and purchased a container for Emmett. Surprise, he won't touch the stuff. Someone at the pet store recommended I mix it with apple or strawberry juice to get him to eat it. Is that safe? (Emmett is a marginated tortoise, I know that makes a difference.)

What kind of camera do you have?

I see everyone's lovely pictures of their pets, and then I go to take some and 9 times out of 10, I get this weird blurry unfocused shot. BLAH. I have a Nikon Coolpix camera. Clearly, that's not great for close ups of hatchlings. What does everyone else use? What are some tips for better...

    My yellow belly slider babies!

Just wanted to introduce my second set of yellow belly sliders, Stewart and Patter. My first pair of YBS were yearling turtles that I brought home with me from a flea market in Florida...when I got home, I scrambled to get them set up in a tank with the proper filtration and lighting. They...

    The importance of screen tops....

Hi Maggie, He has a water dish in his tank and I was told to soak him 2 or three times a week. Was I told wrong? Does he need to be soaked daily??

    The importance of screen tops....

Oh Kristina that is adorable! I suppose when Emmett is bigger and graduates to a tortoise table, I'll see a lot of that. At least then he'll be big enough to defend himself a little more...right now I think Bria could just pick him right up and walk off, LOL. Tom -- thanks for the advice...

    URGENT my turtle , ?

RE: URGENY my turtle , ? I agree with everyone else. 1) They are not a year old. They are much older. 2) That tank is way too small. Even with frequent water changes and a good filter, that water is getting dirtier faster than it can be filtered. I have two YBS in a 20 gallon long. They...

    URGENT my turtle , ?

RE: URGENY my turtle , ? If they are YBS and they are a year old, how do you know if they're male or female? You can't sex YBS until they are bigger, like four inches, and yearling YBS aren't that big yet. Are they very different in size? What do you feed them? I know they have a...

    The importance of screen tops....

Bria (my cat) really enjoys the heat from the basking lights on Stewart and Patter's tank...but it turns out she likes the MVB on Emmett's tank even more. This is why screen tops are not a luxury but a necessity in my house. My cat is pretty...special. :) And a couple of just...

Can't get basking spot hot enough...

I didn't put rock or slate below the MVB because I was worried about it being too hot and hurting Emmett's feet. I checked it twice now with the same Temp gun and I got 90 and 92 degrees. I keep a sticky thermometer on the tank all the time (one of the cheap ones) and that is the one that...

Can't get basking spot hot enough...

I have a MVB bulb on a 20 gallon long, so it's about 12-14 inches from the bottom of the tank. I can't get it any closer to the tortoise. The temperature in the basking light area is hovering at 86 degrees. I have a heat bulb that I run at night, should I be running that more? What do I need...
