I've asked at both Ace and Home depot about cypress mulch and if I would be able to order...they didn't seem to know what I was talking about! So sad!
Tom: Thanks for the links on the substrate. I found a bag similar and same brand as the first link you had posted at a Home depot. It listed...
Wow that's lucky! I'm in the central valley in Ca and I've asked at home depot, lowes, kmart, target, and various garden nurseries for cypress mulch--the reactions I received ranged from, "I've never heard of that," "that doesn't exist because mulch is usually a mixture of forest products," to...
I'm located in Central Ca--in the central valley. I wish I were in So Cal!
I've found a place that sells large farm heat pads. I was wondering if building a house for them to retreat into with either a heat pad or some heat lights would suffice for the winter. Any advice would be welcomed...
I was wondering if there was anyone located in CA with redfoots? I would love to get some housing tips. Summer is ending and I would love to be able to leave the torts outside and want to make sure they are safe and have all they need.
Thanks for the information. I caught them going after chicken poo today. *sigh. I've built half a pen--screwed some boards together to form a 16 by 4 foot area away from the dogs. I'm going to get some shade cloth tomorrow as it's in the sunniest part of the yard and hottest. What's the best...
I have two new red footed tortoises. One I've had for a few weeks and the other a few days. When I let them roam in the back yard, I see them make a bee line towards my dogs poop. I have three dogs and though I keep up on the poop scooping---there's bound to be one I missed. And sure enough...
Thanks redfoot nerd. :) that is one of the first sites I found online and I'm following the diet from it. I think I've gone over that site about 5 times in the last few days. Great stuff!! Thanks
I was going to get Sheldon a friend but read on some posts that red footed tortoises do fine alone. HhmmmMmmm. The last one did bob it's head at me when I picked it up. Does anyone know if this is a female and male thing?
His current enclosure is unimpressive. :) But I'm hoping to get started on an enclosure outdoors this weekend. I was planning on having a hibiscus and a grape plant---but found that the actual fruit-grapes--is a no no to feed? So there went that idea. I'm hoping to find some red clover...
Meg90: Thanks again for pointing me to this forum! I've really learned a lot so far. I was able to find a nice list of safe plants for an outdoor enclosure. I hope to start it this weekend.
Thanks for all the nice comments to all of you. I was thinking it was female but then I was convinced...
Tom: We are in the central valley.
Emysemys: Well Sheldon was an unexpected gift and I've had him for a total of three days now. :) His habitat for the moment consists of a plastic tub with cypress mulch, a water dish, a hide, and his food dish. I'm trying to research as much as possible to...
Hello. I'm the proud parent of a red footed tortoise. We live in California--in the valley. I'm here to learn all I can to provide the best home for Sheldon.
Hello all. I live in California and I was given a red footed tortoise as a birthday present. Now I'm doing a crash course in the care. I'd like to clarify I don't condone giving live animals as gifts...I'm not complaining, I'm a bit thrilled but again...it doesn't usually offer the best of care...
Just received this little one. Any ideas? It's about 5 inches in length by 4inches in width.
And if anyone knew whether this is a male or female--or if it's old enough to tell...that would be greatly appreciated! I've had it for two days now and it bobs its head at me. :)
