Thanks you guys, I feel pretty torn up about it. But I do have my healthy russian and he is a lot of fun, I am just going to invest all my sad-energy into making improvements for Yasso.
:( I really feel bad about it. I think I am just going to stick with Yasso (my russian tort) and use the other set up to grow weeds and stuff for him. I feel like that is plenty responsibility and I am very attached to him, he is a really funny guy.
The little guy was doing great for the first 6 months I had him/her, but then stopped eating. I adjusted the heat in the habitat, made sure he looked hydrated, but he kept just going into a shady place and burrowing and not coming out to eat at all. He had shade, cool shade, warm shade...
So I figured out that one turtle was aggressing on another and removed the aggressor, guess Ill be setting up a new habitat, lol. The two still in that original habitat seem to be out now, will continue checking on them today and if they aren't eating/swimming normally now Ill remove the sand...
The water is heated to about 70-ish. They have rocks along the side of the sand box to bask on, but they keep choosing to bury themselves in the sand. Think raising the water temp will help? Their previous tank had water about the same temp, nice basking spot which they used a lot, but no sand.
I have two young turtles - about 2 inches and about 4 inches diameter - that I put in a new habitat (40 gallon long with ramps to a sand/dirt box, UV light, heat lamps over the 'beach', rocks on the bottom, external cannister filter). They have pretty much dug into the sand and not come out and...
Flat plastron about 5-6 inches long, fat looking tail but keeps it tucked in ... here's pix ... trying to figure out how old and how often to feed. Yasso (name of the tortoise ... ) gets excited about feeding time whenever I mist and goes to the bowl but I know adults are only supposed to be...
I think Koopa is a Greek ... Ill attach a pic ... so I think I do have one greek and one russian, but Ill leave it to the experts to tell me if that is right! Lol.
Hey folks - I did work at Zoo Atlanta for about 8 years but now work at the Yerkes Field Station in Lawrenceville ... Yasso (my russian) is awesome, less shy every day and eats like a champ :D
I have a hatchling (I think a greek ... ) set up in a 50 gallon sterilite bin w a basking light and a UVB light, a hide w spaghnum moss, substrate = ecoearth dirt/coir, and a small paint tray w very shallow water in the far end. Feeding cut up dandelion greens, carrot tops, parsley, and zoomed...
Gorillas are pretty cool. I was a chimp/bonobo snob until I worked with gorillas for a long time and now I miss them terribly! They are very upfront, honest, stoic creatures with a really goofy side that they are too proud to show once they get to be adult. All the other apes are pretty...
Oh and I work with chimps these days but have worked with bonobos, orangutans and gorillas, also. Probably 3 years w bonobos, 8 total w chimps, and 10 with orangs and gorillas. Love them!
Cool, thanks. I posted a thread to see what the votes were, Russian or Greek, lol. But it sounds like you know what you are talking about, so I am going to read up on Russians. Probably you can see something hard to even articulate, like how I might know different chimp subspecies and see a...
