Hello To All;
Just thought that I'd pass this little story to those in the same boat. Before I got my redfoot "Shelly", my wife was giving me a lot of grief. The typical lines, "another tortoise/turtle!", "why?", "you have enough torts", and of course, "NO!". After having Shelly living with us...
Hello All!
Need some opinions on building an outdoor enclosure. My main concern is burrowing. I have Greeks, and they like to burrow in for the night. Anyway, I'm using cinderblocks to build multiple pens, each pen being about 4' X 6'. My main concern with the Greeks burrowing under and out of...
Here in So. Calif, we had a cold spell, (for us) in the 40's. My RF Shelly, really slowed down, wasn't eating, and stayed in her shell most of the day. We had a large Rubbermaid tub, I put in some coconut substata, a house made from a kitty litter bucket cut in half, and some peat moss. I made a...
Calling All Red Foot Fans;
Here are some pixs of Shelly (or Sheldon) What do you think? Male or Female or too soon to tell.Whatever the verdict, She / he is still a wonderful Tort!
Thanks All,
John and Joanie
Thanks for the tip. I got a larger wattage infared heat lamp, and I did your cover method, I made a tent out of a tarp. There was a noticable improvement in her activity. Also the very cold weather is easing up, after all I am in Southern California!

I soaked her this afternoon in tepid water. What a difference! She woke up, and was cruising around her pen. Thanks to all of your great suggestions, I'll try to heat up her area. As suggested, I'm going to: get a higher wattage infared heat lamp, the current one is 100 W; Her pen is on a piece...
Hello All,
My 4 y.o. (?) RF, Shelly has a very low activity level. She is very shy and moves very slowly. My Greeks just cruises along in their pen. The weather in So. Cal has been cold, and I keep a heat lamp on her in the garage. Weather permitting, I'll have her roam the back yard. I'm...
Thanks for the info from all you Tort lovers. I suspect that it could be the space heater. I'll look into the specs and make a determination. One of our problems is that our electric bill has been very low in the past, with all energy saving bulbs and appliances. We got the heater and the bulbs...
Greetings,
I just got my electric bill yesterday and I was shocked! I am using two infared bulb units, one for each pen, and my bill was sky high. I also just started using a electric type heater for my living room. My question is does the heat lamps eat a lot of electricity? I run a 75 watt...
Brought home a new child, the RF. We named her Shelly. Thanks one and all for your generous inputs.
Happy Holidays!
John and Joanie, and of course our torts and cats.
Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately you can't obtain a new friend on emotions alone. I've been burned a few times, and it painful to leave a sick animal behind. The realities of vet bills and the emotional price on caretaker is very high. Hopefully my research and the time I put in will...
From what I've researched, the glass may present a problem. Torts don't understand the concept of glass, or other types of barriers. My Greeks tend to get caught in the chain link fence when I take them outside, their arms going through, but their shells won't fit through, so I have to work them...
A little update. I got a sample of her poo, and it looked pretty good. Fairly firm, not runny, visually nothing moving. I watched her eat and she was eating with gusto. I've decided to pick her up this weekend, but before I do, I have to make her some suitable living quarters. I apologized to...
I have two Greeks, Tetsudo Greca Greca, and I would suggest that, if you can, take them outside once or twice a week, even for a little while, to get some natural sunshine and UV rays. I believe that you can't beat nature. Also I would soak them once or twice a week, in a tub of shallow lukewarm...
Mine are about 3 Y.O. Morty usually poops during his soakings, and Torty doesn't always poops at her soakings. I was concerned, so I took Torty to a vet, and she was determined to be very healthy. I understand that a tort usually pass food eaten in about 3 weeks. Anyway I wouldn't worry a whole...
Thanks to all of you for the encouragement. Before diving in, I'm going to ask to watch her eat and a look at her poo, which I think will tell a lot about her well being. As far as room for her, I think that I have enough yard space. My only concern is humidity. Yesterday it was in the high 70's...
I saw a female RF at a local pet shop. She is about 6-7" long, about 5years old (?). She's housed in a 20 gal aquarium, in dry conditions, and I feel very sorry for her. When I examined her, she's alert and basically appears to be in pretty good shape. Some minor pyramiding, and the owner claims...
Hello All;
I adopted a very young 3 toed boxie that is about 2-3 weeks old. His yolk sac is gone, the oval sac area is still there but closed. I keep him moist and under a infared heat lamp, and take him outside for a while for sun. My concerns are whether or not he is eating. He's very active...
