I found something very promising when searching for fill dirt. This place is very likely to have topsoil and I will go there first thing in the morning! Thank you!

I went out and took photos of the added substances: - Gravel lime (not sure if this is the correct translation.) - Dolimitic lime (not sure with translation) - Iron (Fe) - Manganese (Mn) - Copper (Cu) - Zink (Zn) - Molybdenum (Mo) - Boron (B) - Chalk One of the bags was called "Dirt for...

    ...Auntie wants the lights off

... She is right that the torts will survive for now but they won't thrive. It's quite simple, they need UV and they need the right temperature.

Nobody is selling plain topsoil. It all has something added to (they specify that it is added). Usually it's just more of the chemicals that are in it. Just want to make sure that it is all safe, even though it's in a higher quantity.

    Pro rep or coco coir?

The rabbit cage is fine if it is at least 3x6 feet and is 12 inches high measured from the substrate.

I've been looking at soil but no one is selling completely untouched soil. All the bags have some added nutritients such as Zink and Magnesium. Is that alright? Are there any specific chemicals that are often found in commercial soil that I should try to avoid? I also saw this cocoa husk (as in...

    Help! Found a tortoise...

I will post some photos of the end product on the forum, just to get some second opinions and friendly tips. Sounds like you have a great plan yourself! I wish I could add some tortoises and keep them outside but that isn't really an option for now... Maybe in a decade!

    Help! Found a tortoise...

Definitely a table. You can make a vivarium work but it is a lot of trouble and is probably more expensive than making a table. I'm making one at the moment, I'm using an old closet. Please read this if you do decide to keep him. And please ask questions! This forum is full of knowing people...

    NEWBIE advice needed

You will need a thermometer. Some members recommend guns and thermometers with probes. There are four temperatures you need; directly under the heat bulb, the warm end, the cold end and lowest heat at night. A heat bulb should be enough during the day but if it gets too cold during the night...

    NEWBIE advice needed

The CHE is only used if the enclosure is not warm enough. The bulb does not produce light making it ideal for night time use.

    Help! Found a tortoise...

I'm guessing this is a male who is around five years old. I'd get a bulb that's atleast 100 watt. This is so that you can place it in a height that has no chance of burning the tortoise or anything that the tortoise may drag along. If that results in too much heat in the cold end you can try...

Hey cally! Truth is I've had him for nearly eight years, following the advice of pet store employees. Long story short he has been living in awful conditions all this time and now that I know better I want to make it perfect. But I'm not sure I'll be putting bugs in there.

    New enclosure for Pip?

That is only good enough if it's young and still small. I've seen 6x3 and 8x4 feet recommended for a fullgrown russian tortoise.

    Giving up on the torts

You can either get one with more watt or place the bulb lower. I wouldn't place it lower than 30cm from the bottom, I'd rather get a stronger bulb. 100watt is usually enough but you may need a 150watt bulb. And don't tell them you don't understand. You want them to realise that you do in fact...

Hi! I was going to use a 50/50 mix of topsoil and sand but I've been seeing some people, especially Tom, advice other users not to. Can I use the sand? Or should I use only topsoil? Or mix with something else? I just want to get it right. I'm not a big fan of constipated tortoises.
