I will be building a tortoise table today and I was wondering if I need some sort of wood finishing. I will be working with MDF wood. So should I go with water-based or oil-based or just leave it as it is? Which one is better for the tortoise?

I am more of a fish guy, but I have always had an interest with tortoises. So I decided to finally get myself a tortoise. Please help me in finding and choosing the right tortoise! :]
