RE: What subspecies of Hermann is Hokie?
Ahh, so the pillowing happened before you got them! You can try feeding them machè if you can get it. My tort loves that stuff.

That site has a lot of good info about feeding...
Oh yes, I totally agree. Some breeds suffer from so many health problems it's kind of mind blowing. You would never suspect they were the descendants of wolves. Physical changes aren't my goal though and if I started seeing any I would stop breeding and advise everyone on what I found so it...
What type of material would one use for the label? I'd like to do this to mine in case she got out/away some how. Some type of metal? I'd worry about rust.

Just found this link.

Seems like that would work.
If I'm breeding for tortoises that handle stress well it's going to be hard, but I think that's one of the most obvious traits. I'm not sure though, so I'm going to go to a reptile show soon where I can see a large amount of tortoises so I can devise some kind of baseline and test that I can use...
When introduced into a new a home, I've noticed a lot of tortoises have trouble eating at first. I was wondering what species that was most common in.
I see a lot of Russians, Hermann's, some Sulcatas, some Redfoots, and a few Greeks. But that's just from me looking through the boards a...

What do you guys think? Genuine? If so I think i might snap her up for my breeding project.
I am REALLY doubting this is.
Awesome, that is encouraging!

First of all, any babies I bred I would offer them to forum members or other experienced owners exclusively. If I were to do a breeding project I would like to be able to keep tabs on where they all go and if the owner was no longer able to keep it I would...
Ahhh, I see. I thought they used that to entice the tortoise! Lol, now this whole thread is pointless for Testudos. I suppose it could work for Redfoots but you could mix any fruit mash for them instead.

I only offer it once or twice a week.
Awesome, good to know. My girl is extremely outgoing and fearless. I call her a female because she's large for her age but I know that's not really indicative of gender, especially at her young age. But I think breeding her with another fearless Hermann's would put some more brave Hermann's in...

This sulcata is supposed to be seven years old, but she looks really tiny for that age. It also looks like she's being kept in a glass tank with sand as her substrate. I see mention of a heating lamp in the ad but none of a UVB lamp. Looks...
Cactus is going to be my first add in if my tortoise doesn't take to it at first. She's kind of a pig so I really doubt I need to worry but I like having back up plans.

She's nearing nine months old. She LOVES mazuri, even when I mix in some TNT and calcium powder (w/o D). I figure I...
I noticed that Mazuri has some molasses today so I looked it up and most people agree it is there to tempt the tortoises into eating it. I also am going to pick up some Zoomed Grassland for some extra fiber but I hear a lot of tortoises will bypass that stuff and not even bother with it...
Yeah that's why I was really curious about it. Actually I think my phrasing was wrong. When I mean pet I just mean more resilient to stress really. To me, a tortoise who stresses easily wouldn't make a good animal to keep in terms of interactions. It's too bad those traits don't carry.
Is it possible that it was uneven before, when he was damaged and now it's evening out? I really had no idea. Take this as a bump, hopefully someone with more knowledge can answer.
I have the seed mix from Carolina pet supply. My Hermann's loves the leaves but also ignores the grass so I just ordered some of the broadleaf variety. Maybe she will like that more!
I really enjoy keeping my tortoise and am in the process of hopefully adopting another. In the future I might want to breed tortoises, but if I did I think I'd want to breed tortoises for pets.
I would want to choose the individuals who are most friendly and confident and breed them...
Like Laura said, their reasons might be good. Do they perhaps think you have too many pets?
A tortoise is a really big responsibility, much more than something like a pet rat or hamster merely because of their longevity.
What would your plans be when you move away to college in regards to your...
