Your tortoise can't be in the apartment when it's bombed, or it will most likely die. You can cover his enclosure (tightly) with a tarp, and air out the entire apartment for HOURS before replacing him, but I would probably err on the side of caution and remove the tortoise, all food/ water...
I thought a general rule of thumb was, 'If you can eat it they can, too' (in moderation, and when part of a large variety, of course)?
Is that wrong? =/

The only advice I can give is to remove anything "he" might flip himself with and/ or block or modify the walls so it's harder for him to do again. I find that the more "out of table" time my Owen (a 5-month-old desert tortoise) gets the less he...
Balboa Park (a personal favorite). San Diego Zoo. Sea World. The beaches. Biking around beautiful Coronado Island. Sea-Dos in Mission Bay. Gaslamp (downtown San Diego) shopping/ bars/ nightlife. Hornblower sunset cruises. Horton Plaza, Fashion Valley, or Mission Valley malls (for the...
Well, except for a couple of weeks ago when it was in the 30's* F and all I heard about from EVERYONE was how "cold" it was. Boohoo, we get WAY too much of this warm stuff to complain about the ONE week a year it *might* get cold enough to get frost on the ground.
I still want my winter; I'm...
I received Owen (gopherus agassizii) from a coworker who owns a 3-year-old sulcata. She couldn't keep Owen, too (at the time, a hatchling) due to their size differences and the lack of space available to eventually build them their own separate outdoor enclosures.
Owen is now approx. 5...
^ I agree with you, although all of the pics seem to be to be of a 'baby' gopherus agassizii, the one in the last pic appears to be a few months older than the others; notice the brown growth lines around his scutes compared to the other pics where there is very little demarcation between the...
Just try to focus on the beautiful memories and smiles that were brought into your life by Shelloise.
I'm so sorry for your loss, but know that her time on this earth was enriched due to your loving care! â¤â¤â¤
Yvonne,
Barb's post that said to "Look at their Aldabras" piqued my interest, so I visited their website. Their Galapagos tort pictures feature 3 different young people "riding" their tortoises. I realize these tortoises are HUNDREDS of pounds, and that a child on their backs didn't harm them...
Totally off topic and just my opinion, BUT:
Even if I owned a tortoise(s) that could get large enough for a small child to ride on, I would never even entertain the idea of doing so. :(
That is all.
Yes, while hand feeding him (a Mojave Desert tort that's 4 months old:tort: ). It hurt, and he didn't even break the skin! I have been much more careful, since, because as he ages I imagine he'll be equipped to cause quite a lot of damage!
I'm in love! :)
It's amazing how fast they grow. Owen's only (approximately) 4 months old now, and yet he's already so much bigger than your hatchling. I'd *love* to adopt more, some day, but I'll never live in a house with a yard big enough to accommodate more than one. :(
I'm so...
Owen is a 3 or 4 month old Mojave (California) desert tortoise. I have had him since he was a hatchling. He is *very* curious, and he loves his daily "walks" out in our backyard. Getting out of his tortoise table to explore the world around him seems to be his biggest motivation to climb onto...
Owen will come out of his hide about 90% of the time when I call to him. Once he's come out of his hide, if I need to take him out of his enclosure for any reason (to soak him or take him outside to roam around) I lay my hand down on the side opposite to where Owen is at the time and wait for...
Yes. He accidentally bit my finger once; it hurt like heck! Once he's bigger (he's only about 3 months now) I don't think I'll continue to give him treats by hand, lest he take a finger off in the process. ;)
PS- I have had him since he was a hatchling, and he took food from my hands...
