    Let's see some sulcatas

I live in Pennsylvania. It can be challenging but I have a nice set up inside the house for them ( I have 2) during the winter months. Wood stove in the basement makes it very easy to maintain proper temperatures.

    Let's see some sulcatas

He's a big boy. He's an African import from roughly 70 years ago. That's why his shell is darker and smoother than your average captive bred. I got him in Florida where he lived most of his life with the same owner until she became too old to take care of this boy. He weighs over 200lbs

    Corn?

Corn doesn't have any nutritional value. It is used in many pet foods as a filler. I would never feed mine corn.

    Indoor enclosure pics

Can anyone that has indoor enclosures to house large tortoises post some pics of their setup. Please only setups for tortoises over 100lbs. I think my setups are nice, but I always like to see what others have so I can get better ideas and possibly make mine better. Everyones imagination is...

How to move a 150 pound male sulcata

I like the cart. I have basically the same thing to move mine between the indoor and outdoor enclosure. At 200lbs it's tough to lift him up high, so I have a shopping cart with the basket cut off. I put him on the bottom.

    New & Need Advice!

RE: New & Need Advice! I don't want to come off as rude, but a tortoise probably isn't the pet for you if you are set on keeping him above your dresser. Even though you want a species that stays fairly small, they need and deserve a large area to graze, get direct sunlight, and live happy...

My Tortoises Wont Eat Cuttle bone?!?!?

Try breaking pieces off and sticking them inside squash. If I let them, 2 of mine would eat as many as I give them, my other one won't eat cuttlebones unless I hide them in his food.

the new "what do you look like" thread

RE: the new "what do you look like" thread Thank you. My wife picked it out because if you rearrange the letters of her name, it spells mine.

    Walking into walls repeatedly.

He is physically fine. Your enclosure may be too small, if it is a glass tank, he may be getting too hot. Avoid glass, and give him the biggest enclosure you can. Also, make sure he has sufficient places to hide and his den is cool enough. If everything I listed is taken care of, he may just be...

the new "what do you look like" thread

    Does this look good?

Like emysemys said, it's too small, but most importantly, it will get WAY too hot. My adult sulcata would never fit in that. He's 30 inchs straight line and 200 lbs. A sub adult would push that thing around his enclosure. I would suggest a trip to your nearest lumber yard, and build something...

Can a sulcata live in Washington?

I don't live in WA but as long as the day time temps are adequate, he will be happy outdoors. Obviously he will spend much more time indoors compared to life in AZ. There are folks in Alaska that keep them. It will just take alot of dedication on your part to house him properly.

    My Final Prayer

John has some truth in what he says. He is just looking at the glass as half empty. Is there extreme overbreeding? YES. Is it fueled by the all mighty dollar? YES. But the people who care for these animals are just doing it because they love their animals. There are always gonna be bad pet...

    My Final Prayer

I believe we need to care for all the captive tortoises that are living now. That's what is so great about this forum, sharing knowledge. Everyone can teach and learn new things everyday. John, you don't know everything, and either does anyone else. That's why this forum exists. I do agree that...

    Pet peeve

Is it just me, or does it annoy everyone else when people refer to tortoises as TURTLES? Everyone I know always calls them turtles. You don't get donkeys and horses, or rats and mice confused, so why the ignorance?
