First time building a table (adult hermann's)

Hi everyone, (another longish post sorry!) I already have a main thread with most of the info about my hermann tortoise. In short: I was going off advice given to me by petshops for years and I'm now making changes after finding out i got given all the wrong info. She is 12 years old and I'm...

Tortoise seems worse after a vet visit

Hey Angie thank you for dropping by to ask! Zola looks adorable ? (I'm jealous I'm not by the coast. I love, LOVE the coast) Sherman has caused a lot of tension between me and my mom unfortunately. Even since I switched to coco coir we've had a fungus gnat infestation (strangely enough they...

    UK Coco Coir Substrate

Is that pure coco coir or does it have fertiliser in it?

    UK Coco Coir Substrate

Hi I read alot of forums on here that say not to use top soil. I'm using coco coir on its own keeping it slightly damp. You could always add fine orchid bark as dry top layer

Thank you Lyn , didn't realise it could take a year. Pretty sure my sister has an aloe that she's had for about a year maybe more. If I ask nicely I may be able to get a cutting?

Tortoise seems worse after a vet visit

Hi Tom having another read through everyone's kind advice. (As a quick reminder as so you don't have to re-read my first post. This is a 13yr old approx female hermann's) Previously I had read anywhere from 10-14 hours of UV is what they would need. You have stated that is too long as outdoor...

    Is Pothos ok?

Hi I hope your still active on here. I was also looking to add plants to my tortoise table (in the process of upgrading from a smaller viv) I'll be using coco coir. I've seen alot of users put the link to the tortoisetable database sheet where it states "safe to feed". I also wondered how can...

Tortoise seems worse after a vet visit

I have an order of coco coir on its way, along with a hygrometer As she has always been on very dry substrate (woodchips/straw pellets) Should I gradually increase her humidity or try to get it to 60%/70% straight away

Tortoise seems worse after a vet visit

Lovely name ? She got called sherman because Sherman the Hermann rhymed and when she was little she used to march around making a racket so it made me think of a tank... sherman? Normally call her sherm though so I guess that could be a shortened female name ?

I'm sure she doesn't mind?. As long as I know it's gender now and how I can better suit it's needs

Tortoise seems worse after a vet visit

Hi well although it's a female it actually has a male name ... Sherman? I thought it was a male all this time! as she never laid eggs. (I thought females laid eggs regardless but the vet said not always) And plus I was told it was a male when we purchased her. So I've only known it to be female...

Tortoise seems worse after a vet visit

Thank you Florette is the one I usually buy if I do a quick shop at Asda/Tesco but otherwise I do go to Aldi. Can you send the link to the caresheet please. I found one for Hermamn's on here but it was last updated in 2014 wasn't sure if this is the care sheet or if there is an updated version...

Tortoise seems worse after a vet visit

I do use a thermostat however it only goes up to 32°C so when I switch to the table I'll get a thermostat that goes higher should it be 35-40°C for the basking spot? I only use two lights at the moment Those being • 100Watt ProRep Red Night Spot Lamp on a thermostat at 30°C (duration 24hrs) •...

Tortoise seems worse after a vet visit

Thank you I have got a lot to think about and I'm really annoyed but I guess not surprised that the shops/vets have given me the wrong or misleading info. Really appreciate the info I've got so far from everyone. As far as tortoise tables and top soil/coco coir or cypress mulch. Which would be...

Tortoise seems worse after a vet visit

The UV light switches off at 8pm As Tom says I'll need to change the duration as its on a set timer for 12 hours a day (8am-8pm) When that switches off its dark other than the red heat lamp I do have a ceramic heat bulb which gives out no light. I found that she marched up and down the tank all...

Tortoise seems worse after a vet visit

The straw bedding is ProRep branded it has a Hermann tortoise on the packaging and says its digestible if eaten as when it gets wet it's breaks down into tiny fibres. Again it's only what I've been told to use☹ As for the discoloration my initial thoughts were shell rot or patchy shedding. The...

She also refuses to eat wild plants in the garden (Dandelions etc) or dried leaves/flowers that you can buy in the petshops

Tortoise seems worse after a vet visit

Hi thank you I posted some pics of the vivarium and how she is post vet check up. The beak was definitely overgrown before as she stopped eating her Cuttlefish bone. As you said alot of places give the wrong info and this would've been the case. As the petshop sold us the tank and said it was...
