After doing some research, my husband bought me some Blink cameras for my two tortoise, enclosures, for christmas. They are installed now and even with a couple of minor glitches, I am very happy with them. He put one in each den plus one in each outside area so I can monitor them wherever...
zellajakefarmgarden via etsy or amazon carry several varieties of seed mixes. The only one one I've not had luck with are the dandelion seeds but the others I bought were great.
I have pair of DT's which I inherited from my sister, siblings, now about 20 years old. One was always smaller than the other and I, too, thought nothing of it until I started noticing episodes of bullying--turning the other over, head bobbing, competition for food. I found Tortoise Forum then...
My DT's have been in and sleeping for about 2 weeks now. Just as a guess, tortoises do not adapt quickly to change so perhaps the new burrow is just "different". Did you try putting him in it? And, yes, I'd recommend some soil on top to help retain heat. Can it be moved to a place that gets...
We have 2 desert tortoises and built them separate enclosures last year. Not "easy" because of the block wall (and their dens) but my husband is multi-talented. The grass has grown in nicely and they do eat it. I'm hoping to grow more that they can eat.
I have 2 desert tortoises that are 22 years old, both female. I inherited them when my sister passed away in 2009. She'd had them since they were babies. One is Diamond (she has a diamond pattern on her shell) and the other is Kodak (don't know why).
Thank you for your input. I've ordered some of the Zoo Med pellets so I'll have on hand when my girls wake up in March. We moved recently and had to build new enclosures so, yes, I'm hoping to get a spineless opuntia to supplement. Will have grass (at last!) and some aloe plants and hibiscus...
Any opinions on purchased food, such as Mazuri LS or Flukers Crafted Cuisine, as a supplement to greens? I noticed that the Flukers option contains fruit which is a big no-no for Desert Tortoises (which is what I have).
No. The enclosure is surrounded by concrete blocks, 2 high, and she wants out. We moved recently and her enclosure (and her sister's) is temporary and they are not happy. Will be starting their new enclosures any day now, hoping to finish before they brumate next month sometime.
I wondered if anyone knows of some type of alarm that can be placed on a tortoise that will let you know if she turns herself over? I have a DT in an outside enclosure who somehow keeps turning herself onto her back. I keep making adjustments but she is determined.
I have 2 desert tortoises. We live in Phoenix. We just moved and the new place seems to be infested with crickets. I have a regular bug guy who is careful to not spray near my tortoises. I tried DE which seemed to make no difference at all. My bug guy gave me some bait which we've been...
Thank you. Having read more on the issue, everyone agrees with separation. We are making plans to divide their habitat with some type of fencing. Hoping both will be happier alone, with a bit less space.
I have a pair of desert tortoises, both 19 yrs old, both (I've been told) female. There has been some aggression in the past, usually in spring just after they waken. But this year, I have one that is determined to turn the other over (and has succeeded). I've read some info suggesting hunger...
