Thanks! I know so little about carpentry, etc. I thought I was ready for a tortoise but since getting one I'm like man, I shoulda studied gardening and construction too.
Thanks guys. I figured a shed would easier. My only concern is I would want to grow plants inside the shelter, I would feel bad if for 4 months he didn't have any growing plants.
Should I just do potted plants? UV bulbs or have a window for light? Most days are warm enough to let out for a...
Hello everyone. I live in north Texas and I decided to build a permanent all year enclosure for my red foot tortoise. I tried housing indoors for winter and it's just not working out.
Do you guys think an insulated shed or greenhouse is better? I'm needing to maintain temp with winter nights...
I've been logging the temps and humidity of my outdoor enclosures in texas and it hasn't been too hard to maintain humidity.
1) I have a lot of plants. Clover, grass, hibiscus, etc.
2) I have a lot of mulch and moss.
3) I water once to twice a day the area.
Generally speaking, I'm for less govt involvement unless there's such a large harm involved that govt intervention is needed.
I don't think sulcata breeding is so out of control that it causes a great societal or ecological harm.
I would be ok with minimum care laws in regards to all animals...
Just found his first poop today! It looked, well, healthy, was easy to clean up. The last part of I am working on his keeping his heated house up on humidity.
Here's a pic of his enclosure.
So my red foot lives in an outdoor enclosure, 16x10 area. There's water, grass, plants, hides, heated dog house. Avg temp is 90 high, 80s mid, 70s night. Humidity is 60-95%, depending on the rain or if i just misted.
He's 15 years old, male, 10lbs, I've owned him for two weeks.
He eats well -...
I just added a giant Boston fern to the enclosure today and my tort walked out of his house on his own and checked everything out!
It was the most adorable thing. He stuck his head out of his house, looked at me, then came on out and walked around my legs for a little bit before going back into...
Thanks everyone, I'll be making a trip to the gardening store this week. He still eats not enough I think but I attribute that to him getting used to everything. I finally watched him eat a big chunk of the hibiscus plant!
Hello all! I got a new 12 inch adult male, 10lb Redfoot on 5/8. I named him Oko and he's been a blast. I'm a little concerned with his shyness because he doesn't seem to be eating much.
He pretty much stays in his hut the whole time. I lift him out once a day for an hour to soak and feed him...
