Wow you got hit with a double whammy! I hope you feel better soon. I think many of us have been bit by hand feeding our tortoises, but few are the size of Big Sam! Glad he didn’t get a bigger chunk.
You’re known to the neighborhood as the crazy lady who forages weeds everywhere.
Your family gets tired of me shouting “prickly pear cactus!” every time we drive by one.
Thanks for your response. I have showcase terrariums that are molded polyethylene, so no luck making them bigger. I just let them loose in the apartment, after tortie-proofing of course. But their need to dig is so basic and instinctive, I want to help their little scaly brains feel better! I'm...
Hallo Everyone, I just moved and am temporarily in an apartment until I find a new house. My russian torties only have their large terrariums and the living room floor to exercise in. I sometimes put them in a box on the balcony to enjoy the warm sun as well, but they really miss their outdoor...
I always brought them in at night. I didn’t have a heater and didn’t want raccoons to get under the chicken wire cover. I’m an older woman and I built it myself with bricks! It was fun and satisfying!
Fellow Russian tortie owner and newly moved to SoCal, and that one picture shows a very happy George taking a long sip of water! He is very happy in that picture! I recommend replacing his water container with a clay plant saucer, one that allows him to easily fit within. The one he has now...
I wish I could take it with me when I move, but my two Russians are getting their last days in their mature vegetation enclosure. Next enclosure will be bigger and better!
Oh yes it’s normal, one of my Russians will bury himself deep in his outdoor enclosure. One time so deep he went past the looser soil into the more packed soil & I thought he’d escaped, lol.
Hi all, I am moving soon and unfortunately have to disassemble my lovely enclosure. It’s been a work in progress for a couple years and I just love how everything has matured and naturalized. I live in the SF Bay Area and of anyone is interested in the bricks, screen and soil, please let me...
She truly is beautiful. As I understand it, female Russians are rare to come by. I have Russians about her size that are rescues and I’m told they’re at least 10 years old.
My russian tortie ate a little of the terrarium background which was basically painted styrofoam. He stopped eating and his eyes looked a little hollow, so I brought him to vet. X-ray showed no obvious blockage. I was worried about poisoning from the chemicals, but eventually he recovered on his...
I found what looks to be the original (not LS) and there is a tad bit of sugar in the ingredients which may be why it’s a hit with the torties in the reviews. It comes in 1.5 lb boxes, perfect for me with just 2 Russians.
