Never heard of this so honestly never even thought of it. I've always used tap water considering my towns water is fairly pure. If the water was bad quality around me, I'd probably just use spring water. Someone correct me if I should be doing things differently!
Yeah that is why I am so confused... :( Unfortunately I am in PA and most of the year he can't be outside. It just got warm enough to be outside for any amount of time. He was super sluggish and needed to light to prevent hibernating tactics while indoors. Just want to do what's best for him :)
Just finished dinner, still has food all over, lol!! We’ve had him or her for about 5 months now. Yeah, I know... I probably should have checked if my bulb was sufficient sooner.
Hello!! All the reptisun uvb bulbs always confused me. Just wanted to make sure the one I’m using is sufficient. If there’s a better bulb to order for next time, please share.
I’m using reptisun 10.0 uvb T5 HO high output 24 watts, 55 cm for my 6 inch Redfoot. He/she weighs 425 grams.
Here’s...
Hello! I am a newer tort owner. I am feeding a mix of mazuri pellets, kale, lettuce and organic wheat grass. I am growing the organic wheat grass myself and would like to start growing more weeds/plants for my tort. I got him as a less than 3 month old baby sulcata only eating lettuce. We are...
Thanks again for all the info, I will switch over to a container today.
Last question I could think of, (it’s fall/winter in PA) how do I keep him/her warm on the way to the vet?
Thank you for all the great info. I usually leave the top half covered with a long plastic sheet that resembles a piece of cardboard. I had the little guy in a tank originally to help control humidity but he kept walking into the walls so I immediately switched to this. Any recommendation on...
So I’m using thrive coconut soil for bedding (the knock off of eco earth), my heat lamp is strong so that’s the dangling bulb up high. I only turn that on when I need the temp raised because otherwise the enclosure will sit around 90°F. So keeping the room at temp and turning the heat light on...
Sorry I keep responding separately, just trying to get the info off people that are home!! So the uvb is a reptiglo 5.0 and the heat light is an infrared reflector (the hue is a yellowish and it’s a dome type bulb). I’m wondering if the heat light could be the issue? Is my uvb bulb alright? Thanks!
The uvb bulb is a reptiglo 5.0. Is this a suitable bulb? Is there a better uvb/uva bulb? I have a mercury vapor uvb bulb as well but we’ve had the reptiglo 5.0 running.
Thank you, I have been reading over as many posts as I can. I have been soaking daily 85-90 degree water. I have a cement mixing tub (I believe that's what it's made for) as the enclosure with reptisoil for substrate (no additives). For lighting I have a heat light that creates a basking spot...
Hello!
I got my sulcata baby about 2 weeks ago. The diet was just lettuce and I am now growing organic wheat grass along with sprinkling mazuri tort food on top. Hard transition off the lettuce, he/she is addicted to it. He/she is eating great and we're trying to cut back on the lettuce to a...
Thanks so much for all the info! What do you recommend I switch the daily diet to? I assume the breeder was only feeding lettuce so what should the transition in diet look like for sulcatas?
Thank you for the info! Breeder told me to soak twice a week. I'd much rather follow your advice. Daily soak 20 mins or until he/she climbs out at 85-90 degrees? I will remove the log hide. They told me to feed lettuce but I am reading some of your posts stating grass is better because it's the...
Hello Tom.
I am a brand new Sulcata tortoise owner and this is what the breeder told me to do. I also see lots of pictures of peoples indoor tortoise enclosures and they all have a log hide in it. I was under the impression the log hide was mandatory. Is this not the case?
I have made a humid...
Hello! I know I am way late to this thread but my baby sulcata is climbing on top of his log hide and falling on his back. He isn't large enough to get on top of the hide so he just falls on his back every time he tries. Is there anything I can do?
